Does anyone actually care?
apart from the obvious fact that it gets rubbed in our faces every day and the media are going on as if England have just won WWII!!

I think that a lot of people in Scotland do care about cricket. In fact if I am not mistaken, more people play cricket in Scotland than rugby.
I think that the SNP's Christine Graham's comments were extremely wide of the mark when she allegedly claimed that cricket was of only a "marginal interest in Scotland."
The recent Ashes series has been a terrific advert for the sport and I think the coverage it has received has been completely justified.
Many Scots have represented England in cricket in the past. In cricket England encompasses the whole of the UK. Maybe this will change in the future as Scotland begin to emerge on the cricketing world stage.
Perhaps the debate should revert back to whether we should have a Scottish Six so we could choose our own news content. |

It's not that I hate cricket - it's just that I don't particularly care about it and it seems over the past couple of weeks you can't switch on the TV without hearing about it. Being brought up in the West of Scotland and from a working class background means I HAVE to like football - it's the law!
Unfortunately Christine Graham's comments did smack of 'anti-englishness' on TV but I'm sure in there somewhere she does have some sort of valid point.
Hurricane Katrina anyone? - nope I haven't heard too much about it either over the past few days. _________________ "Every single person on this planet is unique. Just like everyone else..." - Random Guy in Edinburgh Pub

I think sport is very important in life.
Imagine Scotland won the World Cup in football. The whole of the nation would be buoyant for weeks and weeks. This would filter through to all walks of life.
Cricket is such a large sport in England, that winning the Ashes has a similar effect.
I hear what you are saying about the hurricane, but that news was about two weeks old by then. Isn't it good to hear some good news leading the news coverage instead of distress and misery?
The relationship between Scotland and England is comparable I think to Scottish Football and the Old Firm. We need to break away from them to fully realise our potential and make truly independent decisions for ourselves. |

I'll be honest though - I'd STILL rather watch cricket than rugby.
I can't stand watching rugby - partly it's because I don't understand it and partly it's because it's an elitist sport full of people whom I cannot relate to. _________________ "Every single person on this planet is unique. Just like everyone else..." - Random Guy in Edinburgh Pub

Very true, rugby is also a very bad sport. _________________ If you remove the English army to-morrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organisation of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. - James Connolly |

The "England" cricket team is the England and Wales cricket team. Scotland has its own team and competed in the 2003 World Cup.
Scotland also plays in the English County Championship and, the last time I checked, were bottom of the Second Division. |

That's because you're Scottish.
However, if you were English, you would love the game. It's our no2 sport, behind football and ahead of Rugby Union. |

You may find that Scotland never played in the 2003 World Cup, but they did play in the 1999 World Cup in which some games even took place in Scotland. They will be also be surfing on a wave towards the Caribbean for the 2007 World Cup.
The point I was making, was that there have been Scottish players that have played for England in the past, for example Gavin Hamilton.
Finally due to re-organisation, Scotland are no longer in the English County Championship Second Division, but still compete in one of the County trophy's.
Just because you're Scottish doesn't automatically mean you hate cricket. There are so many aspects to a game of cricket that makes it fascinating. Plus, what other sport can you watch for 8 hours a day for five days in a row while drinking ice cold beer |
