LABOUR was forced to respond to more allegations about peerages yesterday when Scotland Yard said it was considering investigating claims that a rebel politician was offered a place in the Lords in exchange for not splitting with the party.
Trish Law, the widow of Peter Law, the Blaenau Gwent MP who died this week of a brain tumour, has claimed that her husband was offered a peerage by a "high-ranking politician" if he chose not to stand as an independent in last year's general election.
"There was pressure put on him. He had quite a number of phone calls from high-ranking politicians not to do it," Mrs Law told BBC Wales television. "I believe even a peerage at one time was thrown in the air."
Mr Law was a former Labour MP, who left the party after it decided its candidate in his Welsh seat had to be a woman. A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the allegation made to the media suggesting the Labour Party offered Peter Law a peerage if he refused to stand as an independent. We will be reviewing that allegation."
Peter Hain, the Welsh Secretary, denied any offer was made to Mr Law. Cheryl Gillan, Mr Hain's Tory shadow, yesterday wrote to him and Tony Blair, the Prime Minister, asking what they knew of the situation.
Angus MacNeil, the SNP MP who triggered the continuing police inquiry into allegations that Labour took cash for peerages, also said he would be asking the police about Mrs Law's claim.
A Labour spokesman said last night: "No such offer was made by anyone." |
