Just an introduction regarding myself before I start posting on this forum. My partner and I have the misfortune to be stuck in England at the moment but we're planning on moving back as soon as it is practical. I work in a specialist area so it is difficult for me to find the right work in Scotland. I'm eventually hoping to start my own company so I can choose where I live. We want to settle down in the highlands and be virtually self sufficient but as we don't have any assets to our name it will be a while before this happens!

My partner and I are both pro-independence (or 'separatists' if you ask my colleagues Smile

)

Hi, "Tamed by a Scotsman", welcome to the Our Scotland forum.

"My partner and I have the misfortune to be stuck in England" - I lived in England off and on for a total of something like 22 or 23 years of my life altogether, not exactly sure which. Anyway, it was far too long ; but, having said that, it wasn't all bad. There are some good things about England. There are places I'm really glad I saw, and people I'm really glad I met. (As well as, of course, some real dumps, and some folk whose acquaintance I could have done without - but that is true of any country).

"we're planning on moving back as soon as it is practical" - how many times have I heard that one? Migrants everywhere tell themselves that. The USA has many millions of Italian-Americans etc, who are descended from folk who were only there "for the moment", and who were firmly intending to go back home and establish their own wee business one of these days. There are Scots who live in England year after year, all the time telling themselves "we're planning on moving back as soon as it is practical", only it is never practical, and the longer they stay the more impractical it becomes, so they end up spending the rest of their lives there, and their kids(or their grandchildren) grow up cheering on the England international football team.

But, anyway, whether you really do move or not, welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the reply. Believe me though, it's a struggle to stay where we are and the longer we do live here the more we want to leave. We're extremely homesick and just don't have any motivation to do anything while we're down here. All our friends are back in Scotland and all our hobbies involve mountains. We're part way through a definite 5 year plan that we are sticking to quite successfully.

What we've found is that moving either improves your life or makes you appreciate where you've come from and what you value in life.
