Scotland's first dedicated Gaelic Music Conference - Iùl Ciùil
(meaning Guiding Music and pronounced Yule Cule!) will take place in
Glasgow's City Halls on the 22nd and 23rd of March. This unique two
day event brings together key players from the Gaelic arts scene to
celebrate the incredible growth in Gaelic Music as well as supporting
those involved in the industry to develop their skills and increase
audiences for their work. The conference will focus on two important
issues for Gaelic Music. Day One will deal with Music and the
Community, discussing key issues such as: education, tradition
bearing, the role of music and song in language development and
community music making. On Day Two Professional Development will be
the key theme and the focus will be on touring & performance, new
music, songwriting, recording, marketing & promotion, digital
technology, IPR, copyright and funding. Both days will include
keynote sessions with inspiring speakers, panel discussions, breakout
groups and surgery sessions with specialist advisers.
Iùl Ciùil represents a key stage in the development of Gaelic Music
in Scotland. Organised by the Gaelic Arts Agency - Proiseact Nan
Ealan, the conference aims to bring together those involved in the
Gaelic Music industry to share ideas, contacts and to help develop
future strategy for Gaelic Music in Scotland. With music
practitioners spread across Scotland, Iùl Ciùil is an ideal
opportunity to bring the Gaelic Music community together. Making the
most of that opportunity, a ceilidh will be held on Wednesday night
and delegates are invited to bring their songs and instruments for
what promises to be an electric session!
The conference will feature some of the top names from the Gaelic
Music Industry including: Donnie Munro, musician, broadcaster and
founder member of Runrig; Donald Shaw, musician, composer, record
producer and founder member of Capercaille; Dr Anne Lorne Gillies,
singer, writer, broadcaster and educator; Dermot Mclaughlin, musician
and former Music Director with the Irish Arts Council and John Purser
music historian, composer and broadcaster. These are just a few of
the names from a long list of those contributing to the event.
Contributor Anne Lorne Gillies spoke of the importance of the
event; "Whether you see Gaelic music as a window upon an ancient and
still vibrant culture or as one of Scotland's premiere commercial
assets, as a vehicle for teaching the language or a way of getting
together and having a good time, as a career-path or as breath-
takingly lyrical, toe-tapping, heart-stopping food for the soul, then
you should come to Iùl Ciùil. And yes - personally I have found it to
be all of those things and more."
Donnie Munro echoed these words saying; "Gaelic music has for some
time now contributed a great deal more to the Scottish Music industry
than might be expected from such a numerically small language base.
As has been witnessed over recent years many Gaelic artists have been
successful in taking Gaelic music to a wider international audience
placing the music and the language confidently in an international
context".
As a subsidised event conference tickets are just £15 and you can
book your place by contacting Proiseact Nan Ealan on 01851 704493,

Years ago a gael said," this day and every other day has gone against us for they have put their backs to us as if we are a nothing and are not worthy of a consideration."
When we consider and reflect on how the Irish have reached out to their diasporo and to the descendants of same with their music, their song and their culture and given a sense of belong to and reinforcing ties with the motherland even when they are many generations removed from Ireland,Who would dispute the success both commercially and culturally of their endeavours. Not I.If they can do it then so can we and more power and success to them that supports, promotes and nutures our heritage. If we know not from whence we came then how are we to know or understand on which path to tread to go forwards. Ar canain's ar ceol.Suas leis a' Ghaidhlig. Chi sinn de ghabhas deanaph. |
