I have been sent an email about a meeting in Dundee on Saturday May 16th
Independent Scotland: A Left Perspective is a pamphlet encompassing views from the Scottish National Party, Scottish Socialist Party, Scottish Greens, Solidarity and the Scottish Left Review and Scottish Communists.
With strong support for independence from the SNP, SSP, Scottish Greens, Solidarity and the Communist Party of Scotland (CPS) the time for debate and building bridges is now.
Next year will see the SNP put forward their referendum bill to the Scottish Parliament. Any prospect for a referendum must and will involve the Scottish Left.
Details of the meeting are below:
ALERT SCOTLAND - DUNDEE BRANCH. You are invited to attend the launch of the pamphlet "INDEPENDENT SCOTLAND - A LEFT PERSPECTIVE" on Saturday, 16th May, 2009, 1.00 - 3.00 p.m. at the Conference Room, Dundee Central Library, Wellgate Shopping Centre, Dundee. Speakers: John McAllion, SSP, and Joe Fitzpatrick MSP, SNP. Questions/discussion. The pamphlet has a range of contributions from: SNP, SSP, Solidarity, Scottish Left Review, ACTSA Scotland, Scottish Green Party, Scottish communists and the Communist Party of India Marxist. Snacks provided. All welcome. Colin Westwood and Jim Torrance.

My wife received that same e-mail and she passed it on to me. The SNP are listed as a party which is participating. The SSP is listed as a party which is participating. Solidarity is listed as a party which is participating. The Scottish Green Party is listed as a party which is participating. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is listed as a party which is participating. But while all of these other parties are listed as participating, we are told only that some "Scottish communists" (with a small "c", note) will also be participating. Both Colin and Jim are members of the Communist Party of Scotland. From which, it would appear that the organisers of this event are the CPS. And yet, the party of the organisers is the only party not mentioned by name. Strange. |

I didn't know there was a Communist Party of Scotland. Are they related to/splitters from either CPGB or CPB?

Many Communists in Scotland disagreed with this decision and instead set up the CPS, with its headquarters in Partick, Glasgow. Some 280 former members of the CPGB in Scotland joined the new party including Mick McGahey, who had been a leading member of the National Union of Mineworkers in the 1970s and 1980s. Former CPGB General Secretary Gordon McLennan is also associated with the party.
The current national secretary of the CPS is Eric Canning. The CPS has fought no parliamentary elections, but has been supporting the Scottish Socialist Party in recent times. The CPS does not feature much on the Scottish political landscape, but they do continue to sponsor a councillor, William Clarke, in Fife.
They support Scottish independence and Eric Canning is honorary convenor of the Independence First (IF) movement which is campaigning for a referendum on Scottish independence. |
