The prospect of a Gaelic high school in Inverness has moved a step closer following the announcement of a public meeting next month.
The meeting at the city's Netley Centre takes place on Monday, March 20 at 7.30pm and will allow parents of children in Gaelic education the opportunity to raise their views and concerns about the provision of Gaelic medium education at secondary level in the city.
Brian ?? hEadhra, of Inverness Gaelic Forum, who has helped organise the meeting, said: "Children in Inverness can be educated through the medium of Gaelic at pre-school and at the Gaelic medium unit at Central Primary but when it comes to secondary education there are only a limited number of subjects which you can take in Gaelic.
"Therefore some children leave secondary school with less Gaelic than they had when they went in and if that's the case, we are failing the whole system.
"We've been looking at the examples in Ireland and Glasgow. And there's no reason why Inverness cannot offer the same Gaelic educational provision.
"We may even attract pupils from outwith Inverness, such as Nairn, Dingwall and Newtonmore."
Comann nam parant, a parents' organisation representing the interests of parents whose children are educated through the medium of Gaelic, have made a representation to Highland Council raising their concerns about the provision of Gaelic available at secondary level in Inverness.
Bruce Robertson, Highland Council director of education, said: "The council is very much looking forward to the discussion about the next steps for Gaelic education in Inverness.
"We have already made a major commitment by agreeing to build a new purpose built primary school in the city.
"Across Scotland the most significant challenge for Gaelic secondary education is the lack of qualified specialist teachers able to teach through the medium of Gaelic.
"Nationally and locally we are trying to address this and I think we are still years away from the necessary teaching supply required to teach all the curriculum in a free standing building.
"However, there are some interesting developments in the use of technology which can be used in the Gaelic curriculum, such as video conferencing, DVD and the internet."
Pupils from the Gaelic medium unit at Central Primary currently progress to Millburn Academy.
The new Gaelic primary school is to be built in Inverness as part of Highland Council's £132million private finance programme along with 10 other schools in Highland region.
The Gaelic primary school, which will be housed close to Inverness Royal Academy, will open in April next year.
Meanwhile, in six months Scotland's first Gaelic education campus will open its doors in Glasgow, catering for up to 600 pupils.
The £3.5million school will offer Gaelic to pre-school, primary and secondary pupils at one site in Charing Cross. |

Scotland's first purpose-built Gaelic medium primary school will come a step closer today with a turf cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction work at the Slackbuie site in Inverness.
Pupils from the Gaelic medium unit at the city's Central Primary School will share the moment in a ceremony which will be introduced by Highland education director Bruce Robertson, education committee chairman Andy Anderson and Matthew MacIver, the chairman of Bord Na Gaidhlig.
The development is one of 11 urban and rural community schools to be built over the next few years in the north financed by the authority's second controversial public-private PPP method of funding at a total cost of £134million. |
