|
|
From the BBC Scotland website -
| Quote: | Unemployment in Scotland fell by 3,000 in the three months to the end of July, new figures have revealed.
The International Labour Organisation figures showed a jobless total of 142,000, which was down by 13,000 over the past year.
The unemployment rate fell by 0.1 of a percentage point to 5.5%.
The claimant count, which measures those on Jobseeker's Allowance, rose by 100 to 85,000 between July and August. It has dropped 5,000 since August 2004.
The rate remains at 3.2%, the lowest recorded level in more than 30 years.
Scottish Secretary Alistair Darling said: "Scotland is clearly benefiting from the stability generated by the UK's strong economy.
"New jobs continue to be created in a dynamic and flexible labour market with around 13,000 fewer Scots unemployed compared with this time last year."
'Boost growth'
However, Scottish National Party economy spokesman Stewart Hosie said: "With the unemployment rate still higher than any other UK nation, at 5.5%, there is no better time than now to start addressing Scotland's economic problems.
"Scotland is in real need of an economic policy that focuses on delivering Scottish success now, as our economy continues to flag.
"We need proposals to boost growth and make Scotland more competitive than the rest of the UK."
The Labour Force Survey (LFS) indicated that the number of people in employment - 2,448,000 - was 9,000 higher than the equivalent period in 2004.
The employment rate amongst those of working age rose by 0.2 of a percentage point on the previous quarter to 75.1%.

I always wonder how they 'massage' these figures to make it look as though the scottish economy is improving all the time.

Aye I've always wondered that myself.
Does the jobless total actually fall or is it just more folk on the 'new deal' scheme? |
