Labour were humiliated again at the polls on Thursday, falling behind the Liberal Democrats for only the second time in history, and loosing 331 councillors.

The main winners were the Conservative Party, who showed real signs of recovery in the North of England for the first time in many years.

The Liberal Democrats had a much better night than the pundits were predicting, gaining 34 councillors and one further council, and cementing their position as the main challengers to Labour across the north. A quantity of seats were lost to the Conservatives in the south, but in the crucial Lib Dem held Lib/Con marginals the Liberal vote bucked this trend.

Plaid Cymru gained a healthy 33 councillors, but lost their only council. Greens gained a poor 5 , but will be pleased to move into second place, in Norwich, for the first time.

The BNP gained a further 10 councillors: ugly maybe, but fewer than feared. The usual smattering of left-wing extremists failed (as usual) to make any impact. UKIP gained a paltry 5  councillors as traditional Conservatives returned to the fold.

With a record low of 24% of the popular vote, it's a new nadir for the rapidly disintegrating Labour Party. Which is nice.

I imagine the BNP will always be fairly insignificant. I don't really let myself worry about them - in fact, I imagine having that one (his name escapes me) in the London Assembly will be quite entertaining. He's obviously an idiot, I discerned that much from his acceptance speech, but at least he'll provide some Galloway or Sheridanesque entertainment.

It was very noticeable how the BNP did much better in Wales than in England in the last General Election.

But they also did very well in the London Elections, finishing 5th.

NUMBER OF FIRST PREFERENCE VOTES

Boris Johnson......... Conservative 1,043,761
Ken Livingstone .....Labour 893,877
Brian Paddick....... Liberal Democrat 236,685
Siân Berry ........Green 77,374
Richard Barnbrook ........British National Party 69,710
Alan Craig ........Christian Peoples Alliance 39,249
Gerard Batten.... UKIP 22,422
Lindsey German ....Left List 16,796
Matt O'Connor...... English Democrats (withdrawn) 10,695 .
Winston McKenzie.......... Independent 5,389

2.5 million Londoners voted in the elections out of an electorate of 5.5 million people.

BNP could never repeat that in Scotland. Some disilusioned London voters have appeared to register a protest vote.

Labour certainly appear on melt-down in England and while the Scots roast in the frying pan with Labour in government from London, we will roast in a firey hell if the Tories get back in power.

True enough, but I think these thousands of BNP voters represent a nation-wide disillusionment with mainstream politics.
