| Quote: | Introduction to the Land Value Tax Campaign -
The Land Value Taxation Campaign is a single-issue organisation based in the UK. It proposes that the rental value of land should be collected and used as the principal source of public revenue, as a replacement for present taxes on wages, profits, goods and services. Why? Nearly every country in the world is affected by poverty and unemployment; widening divisions between rich and poor; boom-slump cycles; housing shortages; inadequate infrastructure; and damage to the environment. These economic ills persist, seemingly intractably, despite unprecedented developments in science and technology. All of them are ultimately related to the different economic behaviour of 'land' in contrast to man-made consumer and capital goods, which are can be produced in response to demand and are transportable.
But land is otherwise. No more can be produced: each plot of land is unique and immovable, and its total supply is fixed. Consequently, the market in land behaves differently from the market in products. Land value comes from the natural and man-made advantages of location, which derive from the presence and activities of the community as a whole. From this conclusion it follows that the value of Land, its rent, is peculiarly suitable as a source of public revenue. Whilst not, in reality, a tax, but a payment for the right to hold land and enjoy all the benefits of occupation, this policy is usually referred to as 'Land Value Taxation', and would operate as an annual charge on the rental value of land, assuming that each site was in its optimum permitted use. When this policy is applied, most of the problems mentioned in the first paragraph are mitigated or vanish completely. This proposal cuts across all political divisions and for this reason the Campaign has no party political affiliations. |

"There are four ways to spend money. A) You can spend your money on yourself, in which case you will strive for a mix of the best bargain and the best quality. B) You can spend your money on someone else, in which case you are still interested in a bargain, but the quality of the product or service becomes secondary. C) You can spend other people's money on yourself, in which case price is no object but quality becomes a great concern. D) Finally, you can spend other people's money on other people, in which case neither price nor quality is of great concern."

A very worthwhile site - I came across it a while ago. There's a long standing (if so far ineffectual) Lib Dem internal campaign group on LVT of which I used to be a member. It would be great if the SNP could be pushed in that direction, much better than LIT. _________________ It's murder every week at Firhill. |

The Greens have this as a policy and argued for it in parliament (also innefectual). Graeme McIver and others pushed for discussing it in SSp and again in Solidarity, it does make sense.
For a long while my own old left prejudices just saw the words 'land' and 'value' in the same sentence and I didnt pay it any atention.
