An independent Scotland would not join NATO. That's SNP policy, but it seems to be under threat (like a few others). After the NATO blitz of Bosnia (read this http://www.michaelparenti.org/MediaAtrocities.html) I would have thought that non-membership was completely uncontroversial, like not joining the Ku Klux Klan. After Afghanistan, after Iraq, before Iran and Syria - does anyone really still want us to get involved with these oil-industry mobsters and their English poodle? Well, yes - Angus Robertson, MP, of the (I'm sorry to say) SNP. Angus has set up a working group to look at defence policy, expected to report in new year. Angus says that anytime he mentions independence, the first thing people say to him is - well, you'll have to join NATO (what odd company the poor chap must keep).
Stand by to tear up yer membership card?

This was discussed by McAskill in a Scotsman article a wee while back. IIRC, he seemed to be saying that it will be very difficult for us to become independent without the consent of England. One of Englands main conserns in security and they might try and make life difficult for us if they do not think we are going to join NATO as it would create a potential weakness in their security. |

We wouldn't have to get Englands consent, we have the right to self determination. _________________ Alba Gu Brath!

You're right, but at the end of the day maybe one of the reasons we are not already independent the British government and associated agencies and the English establishment are against our independence with English security being one of the main concerns. Remember one of the reasons for the Union in the first place was to protect English borders. I doubt it would make any difference, but I can understand the motivation to try and remove this obstruction. |
