I know. Did you see my note about the calendar? You all get an extra holiday up there.
Have fun. Hazel |

Yes, but what we gain today we will lose another time.
I don't think we get any more holidays than the rest of the UK, England and Wales will have a holiday that we don't get (in August i think).
Still, i'd rather have it this way, it is important to me to maintain the tradition of New Year being a major celebration in Scotland.
Sadly, however, i think it is in decline due to our television ect being controlled by and geared towards England, where Christmas is the main thing.
Before WWII Christmas was not a big occasion in Scotland, with many workers only getting a half-day off, whereas at New Year many businesses shut down for a week! |

If I am not mistaken, I read in a BBC newsletter last year that the department stores were open on Christmas Day. There was a protest in Scotland to close these stores on Christmas Day but the owners said it was their biggest day of the year. I find that so hard to imagine. Everyone out shopping on Christmas Day?

I had not heard of this, but it doesn't surprise me that some large stores were open, the taditional "January Sales" have started on Boxing Day for a few years now.
Everything is so commercial now it makes me puke, Christmas is for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but everything now is just another "retail opportunity".
I guess the shops must have been open in the cities, everything was closed here in my wee toun. |

I'm just thankful the chinese/indian takeaways stay open for most of the time since otherwise I wouldn't have eaten! _________________ "Every single person on this planet is unique. Just like everyone else..." - Random Guy in Edinburgh Pub
