Sir Iain Noble - a well known Edinburgh financier - has written to Jack McConnell asking him to commission a study into the benefits of Independence. It has been dismissed out of hand.

Banker's independence question
HAMISH MACDONELL

ONE of Scotland's most successful businessmen has called on Jack McConnell to find out whether Scotland could survive as an independent country outside the EU.

Sir Iain Noble, who founded the Edinburgh merchant bank the Noble Group, wrote to the First Minister asking him to commission a study into the benefits of Scotland going its own way.

"Scots have roughly the same natural resources as Norway, and the same financial skills as the Swiss, so it should be possible for Scotland to perform at least as well as those countries," he said.

Sir Iain published his letter after not receiving a reply from Mr McConnell.

A spokesman for the First Minister said it was not unusual for there to be a delay in answering letters and said Mr McConnell was unlikely to agree to the request.

He said: "I cannot see the people of Scotland being particularly happy in spending money considering this issue when it has been rejected so many times at the polls."

Good man, Sir Iain - worthy of the title which so many are not.

I've heard him on BBC Alba programmes speaking Gàidhlig which he has learned fluently - i belive he was influential in the setting up of the Gaelic College on Skye, where he runs the Praban an Linne distillery
- i bought a bottle when i visited !

I think the Sabhal Mòr is on land that belonged to him and he gifted for the purpose of the collage - and he helped fund it as well.

Is the whisky any good? I've not had a chance to taste it yet - I can't seem to find it in the Edinburgh whisky shops and not been back to Skye for a while.

Yes, it's all gone now!
I bought the Tè Bheag (with a picture of a fishing boat on the label) which had been "cold filtered", if i remember correctly, a process that had went out of use in the late 1800's. Unusual, worth a try.

Totally shocking Mr McConnell never replied. And for a spokesman to reply shows the arrogance of the man. At least Sir Iain Noble should have had a direct relpy... Mind you I had this treatment from my local councillor when I contacted him. Labour, rotten from the core...

I wrote to McConnell myself after this - questioning some of the assumptions made by his spokesman. I've not had any reply either Rolling Eyes
