Shinty secures new funds package.....

Shinty is being given funding of £95,000 in time for the start of the new season.
The Camanachd Association, the ancient sport's governing body, will get the cash from sportscotland.
The money will be used to help players improve their skills, coaching, volunteering and club development.
Shinty has switched permanently from a winter to summer playing season. This year's fixture list begins this weekend.
Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson announced the funding package from sportscotland, which works closely with the Scottish Executive.
Ms Ferguson said: "This funding will help to support the development of Scotland's ancient and unique sport as it grows and develops in its modern form by investing in current talent and in introducing the game to the shinty stars of the future."
This season, which is due to finish on 28 October, marks the permanent switch from winter to summer following a two-year pilot.
The organisation rebranded itself under the tagline "Shinty - more than a game" which reads "a' cumail taic ri spors na h-Alba" in Gaelic.
The playing season move also saw the reorganisation of the National League Division One set-up.
For the first time in the history of the Camanachd Cup, this year's final will be played in Argyll-shire. The game at the Dunoon stadium will be the 99th cup final.
Future plans
Richard Tulloch, Camanachd Association chief executive, welcomed the new funding.
He said: "The continued support of sportscotland is greatly valued by all in shinty. Not only is the money of huge, practical value, but it also indicates sportscotland's endorsement of how the Camanachd Association is organising and managing the game.
"Together we are making significant progress and the partnership will continue to develop as we go forward."
The Camanachd Association is to meet the Scottish Parliament's cross party group on sport on 8 March to discuss developments in the game and plans for the future.

I'm no sure what it means either, but i welcome the 95k, although how pish is that? It widnae buy a Partick Thistle player let a loan a whole National League.
It does not go far enough, encouraging shinty in Alba could help us compete with the hurley teams of Eire where there is a more widespread passion for the sport ...and revenue.
Most people will not know that this game was one of the most popular games in Cornwall untill the 1920's when it almost died out. It is rarely played there now, but they were once the champions of the sport.
The different rules and camans are an obstacle to a Celtic League but it is not impossible to resolve this. It may have to be done gradually, over a couple of generations, but it is achievable. |

| That would be good Abieuan. Is there any sign that a team might come out of Cornwall again? What about Wales and Brittany... have they had any similar sports? |

Aye,I agree with ye.£95.000 is pish poor fer ra great game.According tae ra "Edinburgh Sucks" site yer local bigwigs spend mair on themselves,allegedly. I watched and was highly entertained a few years ago by a shinty international match between the Irish and Scots at Portree in Skye.The Irish used traditional hurley sticks and the Scots used shinty sticks.The importance of that meeting cannot be under estimated.Close ties were established and friendships across the sea formed with kindred spirits,folk following worthwhile traditions in the best sense of the word.It is most definately an achievable goal for the game.You would only need to take a look at what the Feis movement,Mary Ann Kennedayand others are achieving in gaelic music and song.The collaboration between Scots and Irish musicians and singers has been very sucessful indeed,each learning and instructing one another in their ways of making music and song.This type of collaboration is not inclusive to celts only but extends to all with a love of music and song.I would like to see and hear much more of this. |
