SNP 'on track to win'

ALEX Salmond, leader of the SNP, yesterday claimed his party will win next year's Holyrood elections after a by-election victory on Chancellor Gordon Brown's doorstep.

John Beare enjoyed a 30 per cent swing from Labour to win the Markinch and Woodside East seat on Fife Council on Thursday.

Even if the SNP do win the next election, it does not mean independence will be forhcoming in the near future.
Politicians are notorious for changing their opinions and views AFTER being elected.

Wee Eck has provided us all with a history of 'we will win .........e.g. free in 93, etc'

Don't anyone hold their breaths, one swallow does not a summer make!

There is a very worrying side to this, the voters, of whatever party, are sick of hearing about done deals in advance of their doing anything. Its mistaken, its presumptious, but unfortunately wee Eck is not given to accepting advice, witness the existence of the SEP.

In this case, it's unlikely to be anything to do with the politicians changing their mind. Alex Salmond will not be changing his mind; it's the mind of those in London that will need to be changed. Ultimately, the peaceful route to independence is through Westminster.

I imagine the position of the Scottish Executive (if it was lead by Alex Salmond) would be instrumental in making the UK Government take any action towards any sort of constitutional change.

And the SNP 'winning' the election might not be enough. They still need members of other parties to vote for a referendum.
