There was an item in the BBC's One O'Clock news today about the Scottish Government's white paper on independence. The reporter started off saying:

"It was supposed to have been settled ten years ago"

and went on to say that the result (he was obviously referring to the referendum) meant that Scotland would remain in the UK.

This implies we've already had a referendum on independence, and it was a vote in favour of the union.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

You can't do that, surely...

Just saw that too on BBC News 24. It certainly was misleading. But then it is the BBC and the piece was designed for consumption by a non-Scottish audience, so I'm not surprised really.

To be fair to him it was supposed to be "the settled will of the Scottish people" according to John Smith when he led the Labour Party. It was also supposed to "kill nationalism stone dead" according to George Robertson.

Jenny Colgan is a moron - have a read of her columns, or see some of the chicklit she's written.

Why does the British media give people like her any space?

Andrew Castle went one step further tonight on the Ten O'clock news and actually said that we had a referendum a decade ago and voted to stay in the Union. Did I miss that referendum?

What are the BBC playing at?

Not only have the lost the plot about the devolution referendum in 1997, they also managed to find the only bonehead "members of the public" in the world who seemed utterly confused as to whether Scotland was a part of the United Kingdom or a part of England.....

God almighty!

This is shockingly bad stuff from them, which we have the "privilege" of paying them for.

I saw that as well. Do you think it's worth sending them a complaint?

I complained about the bias of one of Nick Robinson's reports on the news a couple of months ago and it was the first time I got a proper reply back from the EBC.

I am quite shocked at what's happened to the BBC now, but then they really do have a vested interest in keeping the union together as otherwise what do they become?

I imagine they'll still be the BBC and carry on as they've always done, in exactly the same arrogant way they do now.
