Apparently somebody called Nicol has resigned from something.

Wendy now Nicol.  Hmmmm.  Could this be Betrayer Broon's master plan to wrest the Scottish Government from the SNP?

Don't be surprised if both leaders are replaced by hardline unionists and a new Lib/Lab pact deposes the Scottish Government.

Not actually saying that would be bad for the cause BTW just that it would not surprise me.

Don't know how the Lib Dem leadership election works, but what if a more independence-friendly candidate is voted in and they forge closer links with the SNP allowing a successful independence referendum to happen?  It could happen.

Well, I'm just going by my judgement based on past actions.  Broon is a typical 'christian' bully of the worst kind. (The most un-christ like acts I have witnessed in my life have been from self-avowed christians) To me there is absolutely no doubt that if he could arrange a LIB/LAB pact to depose the SNP he would.

Having said that I fervently hope that those who are more optimistic are correct and that NS has been shoved off the bus to allow more collaboration with the SNP especially, of course, on an independence referendum.

Sadly, my expectation that NS would meekly agree to this is very low indeed compared to him agreeing to stand aside for an uber-unionist (and wait in the wings to come back if it goes pear shaped).

It's difficult to keep up!  Has there ever been a week quite like this?  To lose one opposition leader is careless, to lose two in a few days....

I can see the point about a potentially renewed Unionist squeeze from whichever hapless individuals emerge from the Labour and Lib Dem contests.  However, it is difficult to imagine a set of circumstances more condusive to an SNP by-election win in Glasgow East.  It will be all about getting the vote out, despite the Glasgow Fair.  Bring it on.

If the Liberals joined with Labour to depose the SNP then that really would be the end of them.
Why on earth would they want to be associated with the most unpopular party in decades ?
It would be political suicide if that were to be the case.

Labour and LibDem combined does not a majority make. They would need a bit of help if they were to try to oust the SNP at Holyrood.

If Tavish Scott takes over you can forget any ideas of the LibDems cosying up to the SNP over the referendum or anything else. He seems to be pathological, almost Labour-like, in his hatred of the nationalists.

I see Mike Rumbles MSP has told BBC Scotland that he is going to stand for Lib Dem leader.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7486857.stm

Mr Rumbles being MSP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, said he would re-visit Mr Stephen's opposition to a referendum on Scottish independence.

Considering the SNP are capitalist and social democrats themselves they might find the Lib Dems may want to get cosy after all.

How can Rumbles say this

Quote:
would re-visit Mr Stephen's opposition to a referendum on Scottish independence

but then say this

Quote:
that the party had to take a harder line against the SNP than before

That is a confusing stance, even for the Lib Dems

It is possible to support  the concept of an independence referendum but take stiff opposition to the SNP.  Wendy Alexander? Very Happy  It is how the  MSPs voted on the Scotland Bill that would matter when placed before Holyrood.

Interesting the Aberdeen Press & Journal hints also at Tavish Scott standing how Lib Dem attitudes or policy would sqaure then I do not know.

http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/721169?UserKey=0

Anyway I am a Solidarity member and pro-independence and for the referendum but deeply in opposition to the SNP as a party.

No it isn't.

He could be in favour of having a referendum on independence, as a means of settling the matter (and possibly also as a means of trying to get the LibDems into government again) yet be in favour of the Lib Dems campaigning, in that referendum, against independence.

Or better still, he could be in favour of a referendum on independence, and take the truly liberal and democratic attitude that it is up to each individual LibDem to make up their own mind on how to vote.

That`s labeled in LibDem land as consistency. Shocked

Old smiley chops had a bit of a reprimand from Aberdeen EE for not supporting Aberdeens bid for the Energy thingy they had bid for a few years back, citing civil servants telling him not to say anything. Papers opinion laid into him.

I would love it if Tavish Scott was leader, his fervent, uncontrollable hatred for Salmond and the SNP will do the Lib Dems no favour at all.

Think Rumbles was a quick off the mark in declaring his interest.

The words, "I'm resigning," had barely left Stephen's lips and Rumbles was in there.

Media are saying it would come down to a choice between Finnie and Scott.

Which 'hardline Unionists' do you see in the parties concerned?
