Ok i am going to be very careful when writing this so i dont come across as ignorant or anything else that i aint. Its just i feel that Scottish history should be taught more in our Schools. not once throughout my school life did i hear the name Robert the Bruce or King Alexanda. And yes i feel it should be taught to a higher extent than what the world wars are. I am not saying dont teach bout the WWs ofcourse i aint. im just saying that school kids need to know what there country went through and where they came from. Instead school kids are brain washed with pro union history lessons.

To the victor, the spoils. History is written by the winners. Roman historian's descriptions of 'barbarian' peoples furth of the empire (Celts among them) is a case in point. Initially, this was purely propoganda to ensure support for invasion/occupation. Once coerced into the empire the subjugated states were made aware that their culture, their language and their history were inferior and erroneous. The clientela system ensured the consistent dissemination of the Roman way and a rejection of the inferior indigenous culture / history.
It's the modus operandi of cultural colonialism.

I understand that fact. But then if that is true then the education system is basically saying that Scotland was somehow defeated and that its history should be forgotten.

At the end of the day History is taught as a school subject probably not so much from the knowledge point of view as rather; teaching kids the ability to look at different propaganda/sources etc weigh them up and try to come to some sort of view of what the reality was. If this can be demonstrated easier with WWII, the cold war, whatever then i'm all for it. It's far more effective and current than using sources from hundreds of years ago. I'm not saying tht Scottish History shouldn't be taught, far from it, I'm just saying that perhaps we should have a wider ciriculum, sure teach basic Scottish History in primary school, but in secondary I think eyes should be kept more on the ball and be reminding people about real issues that still effect us today.

I think Scottish history does define who we are today. History is a platform for some peoples desire for independence. It also helps us to understand how got to the point we are at today. Before the World Wars there was alot of history that defined our nation that has to be taught and be known across all school students.

I am a school teacher and teach History. You'll be glad to hear that with the new curriculum there is a dedicated Scottish element at each stage.

Also the higher now has a Scottish enquiry skills section from 2010
