"The Union of England & Scotland under threat"

Looks like it finally hit Yahoo! Very Happy

Brown: 'England union at risk' Saturday January 13, 07:00 AM

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gordon Brown has warned that the Union of England and Scotland is at risk, 300 years after it was formed.

The Chancellor expressed his fears of a "dangerous drift" and rejected calls for English laws to be decided by English MPs alone now that home rule has been brought in.

In a national newspaper, he wrote: "It is now time for supporters of the union to speak up."

"The failure to defend and promote the United Kingdom is now becoming more a feature of the thinking of the Right.

"In contrast to Lady Thatcher, who rightly defended the Union and did so even when not expedient to do so, Conservative writers now embrace anti-Unionist positions, from independence to another anti-Thatcher stance: 'English votes for English laws' - itself a Trojan horse for separation.

"Regrettably, an opportunist coalition of minority Nationalists and what used to be the Conservative and unionist party is forming around a newly-fashionable but perilous orthodoxy emphasising what divides us rather than what unites."

Mr Brown insisted: "Of course it is healthy to recognise the distinctiveness of each nation. But we will lose all if politicians play fast and loose with the union and abandon national purpose to a focus on what divides."

His comments come amid signs that the Scottish National Party will perform well in forthcoming elections.

It's also thought his views may be seen as evidence of his concern over being seen as "too Scottish" if he succeeds Tony Blair as Prime Minister later this year.

Of course, I support seeing independence, so I don't agree with what's been said here. Rolling Eyes

It basically translates into "Vote Labour since the Tories are Nats too"

All a load of nonsense, but it is a fear for some. Happy that your ideology is effectively a bogeyman used to scare children?

I agree that Brown is using the Bogeyman tactic.

I don't think I expected much more of New Labour or any Unionist to be honest. I never expected a fair argument, or a fair hearing for my beliefs.

Mind you, I'm rather cynical about these things.

Anyone who thinks breaking the Union is going to be easy is naive in my opinion.
