A Barbados History.......... $#!*! The British are Comming!http://users.sunbeach.net/jrmoore/history.html#obeah
Well ignore the part where it says that bajans speak with a "British accent" whatever that is because that is just the biggest load of BS EVER!! I always have to translate whenever anyone comes to visit, I mean, is jamacian a "british accent?" DUH!!
Obiviously this John Moore guy is english!! 'cause I can assure you anything that remains of the Colonial past is being pushed aside, forgotton or just plain written out of the statutes. And while cricket is recognised as an english invention, west Indians have claimed that their kind of cricket is exclusively theirs! However, that too is now on the wane, a thing of the old colonial past as any cricket fan can see judging by the results over the past ten years or so!! .
Apart from that all else seems to be right on babes!
Oh PS, ignore the statement about "the native American nomads!" You could just as easily say, the "British nomad settlers" as well.
And also, for those who read it that fotie in no way represents a slave hut!!! That would be a palace by comparrison!! However they are called "Slave huts" by everyone for some reason!
OK BA please feel free to mark my homework. speeling mistakes etc, you ken the drill!!

Hi BG,
very interesting.
Alas, John Robert Moore would appear to one of those who think British is a synonym of English.

Blackadder

This thread has gone to the dogs!
|
Babygael
|
That was your intention all along was it?
Hi jimbo, yes and can you imagine a Bajan with a British accent? I can't stop laughing at that! anyway, you get the distinct impression, well I do anyway, that when they say "British" they really mean english!!
I'm bad!!
|
Blackadder

Bad??? You don't know the meaning of the word, peasant!
What I meant was that your first post in the thread was not thought through. People don't like being given a screed of stuff to read on links. Been there done that. The topic was interesting, but your point about Moore got lost ... because there's so many of the b*sta*ds like him see no problem equating the southern half of this island with his imperialistic and anglocentric mentality.
I also think you posted on the wrong thread. The topic just doesn't fit well with what goes on here, does it? It's a lot more trivial than the subject you wanted to open up for discussion. I can understand your passion about it ... but this part of the forum doesn't seem to like serious subjects. I blame the moderators! But who's to say they're not right either?
Sorry, BG ... but this subject really has gone to the dogs ... in General Banter (soon to be renamed General Blackadder ) anyway!

Speak for yourself BA. I like the odd bit of interest in any link. You don't have to open the link you know. XX

Oh 'scuse me your majesty!! Yuh right!!! Whats this a dictatorship? I don't do fore lock tugging/arse kissing, so you might as well know that early o'clock!! Independence beings at home!!!

I see the girls are at it again. You two are putting others off you know. They won't join in if you keep up with this attitude. Can't you just try to get along and accept I'm your superior in every way, once and for all? Get past that and I'm sure we'll be fine!

Erm, I think the BG's post was intended for you Sir Blackadder. I think there are a few things which YOU need to grasp.
|
Blackadder

I have already grasped the obvious ... and you two fall far short of it!

Sorry I may be missing simething but why ignore the bit about Native American Nomads? There where native Americans living on most Carribean islands before the Europeans and black people moved there!
Also, Geoffrey off the Fresh Prince of Bel Air speaks with a Posh Eytonian British Accent, he may or may not be from Barbados but I think he should count!

Blackadder

Welsh Git, I think you'll find that Geoffrey spoke with Cambridge inflections, and was from Trinidad originally!

And in the great shape of things, does it really matter how he spoke BA. Duh

Well yes, if you watch "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", Mince-heid. It's a plot device throughout the entire series history!
Or have you never watched it? It really is a very funny prog, and the very funny Will Smith cut his comedy acting baby-teeth on it.

No, I must admit, I have never seen the programme.

Yes you are missing something, try reading the bluidy thing and you will see that the Arawak and Carib Indians did live on the Islands, comming over from S.America. However in Barbados, which is what the link is about, there are two trains of thought,
1) That there were no Indians left when the First settlers arrived.
2) That there were as few as maybe six left. There is a place called "Six mens" in the Parish of St.Peter which was named so because of the number of Indians, who are believed to have lived there, and certainly there were a lot of artifacts discovered in that area, where now port St.Charles and Almond Beach hotel sit.
However, after settlement some were later brought over to Barbados to assist the Europeans by showing them how and what to grow in the tropics basically. They either died out or were assimulated to a degree that now they have disappeared in Barbados. You will only find the Caribs in Dominica now.The authority on this now would be Dr.Lennox Honychurch. He actually works with the film crew on "Pirates of the Caribbean"
Ther other thing is Black people largely did not move here, they were transported from Africa on slave ships.
Geoffrey in no way and by any stretch of the imagination represents a Bajan accent!!
