Why they'd even want to know someone's 'identity' is beyond me.

Considering the make-up of UK and the various calls of different parts of the populous at varying point to leave the 'union' it's probably a fairly good indicator of how unified the people feel ... maybe ... or not?!

Anyway, it's bound to be something like that ... maybe it helps them identify who needs to be 'watched', although a quick squizz at forums like this one would achieve the same! Wink

A census is all about gathering data on the population for statistical purposes. Past censuses have gathered information about identity, such as ethnicity, so why shouldn't the 2011 census?

Of course they should, it's a means to enable the State (regardless of a persons politics) should reflect the people it is reponsible for. It's the same reason why they also need to know the religious makeup of the population. Aventinan, as usual is merely trying to draw attention to himself.
