After Norwich Northhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8168463.stm
How long can Gordon hold on I don't think for much longer.
Charles Clarke has blamed Gordon Brown for the by-election defeat:
Labour have committed political suicide in Norwich.
"The main reason for the Norwich result was that voters there were quite clear that it was for them, not the Labour leadership, to decide whether or not Ian Gibson remained their MP. Ian is widely respected for his constituency work and his commitment to Norwich."

I agree it's entirely possible that it was an Ian Gibson protest vote (against the b*****s who lead the Labour Party searching for a scapegoat) but why didn't Ian Gibson stand as an independent? He seems like an honourable man who got caught up in the culture.
I think he said, "If you fire me then I'm resigning." and of course the loonies currently running the Labour Party didn't have enough common sense to see the eventual outcome of eating their own.
It is very clear the Labour Party is going to be wandering the wilderness for the next 15 to 20 years as they just did prior to Tony Blair's victory.
I guess they're happy they got rid of Tony now. I knew GB would screw it up but it's quite taken my breath away as to the apocalyptic scale of his mismanagement of everything he touches.
He wasn't elected, stuck the knife in Tony for the last 12 years and grabs power a year or so after Tony is elected Prime Minister.
I hope Scotland's parliament can protect it from the excesses of the next Tory government.
Ian Gibson is more than welcome to become a representative in an independent Scotland.
Viva la repůblica!

Geof Hoon was terrible on BBC's Question Time a happless character if that is the correct term.
Labour is not listening to anyone and face a wipe out in England at the general election.
Their support is not guaranteed in Scotland either with popular support for the SNP holding it's own. Wish they would set a date for the Glasgow by-election.
I don't think a devolved Scottish parliament will protect us from savage public spending cuts the Tories will impose on Scotland.
With a Tory government in Westminster we are guaranteed a Yes vote in any independence referendum we might get. We would face history repeating itself again with Scotland voting SNP/Labour and getting Tory rule from London.

Oh dear, I fear for the Scots and the other poor sods in the North of England. I would very much like the North to have its own parliament but they don't seem to really want it.
I thought the years suffered unde the Thatcherite junta would have been enough?

Er, you're really not. You've still got that missing 30% to make up.

It was for the people of Norwich or for Ian Gibson to decide if he remained the MP and Charles Clarke is being somewhat disingenuous by suggesting that it was the Labour leadership who called the by-election. They did not.
The Labour Party - like every other party - has the right to choose those who stand in its name. However it decided that Ian Gibson would not be reselected, that is an internal matter and it did not require that Ian Gibson stood down. That was his choice.
He also had the choice of standing as an independent at the by-election. If reports are right, he would have won and Labour would have got a bloodied nose. He chose not to.
And now the people of Norwich East have got a wee lassie with next to no experience of life as their representative. That's their choice; it wouldn't have been mine.
