Alex Salmond formally adopted in GordonSalmond Formally Adopted as Candidate for Gordon
snp - 2007-03-09
Scottish National Party leader Mr Alex Salmond was formally be adopted as SNP Scottish Parliamentary candidate for the Gordon constituency at an event last evening [Friday]. SNP members and supporters gathered at the New Inn, Market Street, Ellon at 7.30pm. The guest speaker was Richard Lochhead MSP.
Mr Salmond said:
“Serving the folk of North East Scotland has been the greatest privilege of my political career. I am honoured to have the opportunity to represent Gordon in the Scottish Parliament – including the 12,000 Gordon constituents I already represent at Westminster.
“A strong voice for Gordon – and strong leadership for Scotland – these are my pledges in this election.
“The SNP are leading the policy debate with our positive campaign, showing how we can make Scotland a wealthier, healthier, and safer society. That is my vision for Gordon, and the whole of Scotland.
“The SNP are buoyed by our strong poll lead in North East Scotland. The latest ICM poll puts the SNP on 51%, Labour on 16%, Tories 15%, and Lib Dems 12% - giving the SNP more support in the North East than all the other parties put together.
“The SNP are bringing forward the policies to make Scotland more successful – to lower class sizes in primaries 1-3, keep vital health services local, reduce the business rates burden, and develop Scotland’s green energy potential. And we have a positive vision for Scotland’s future, trusting the people to choose independence in a referendum.
“The reality is that Scotland has so much potential, but we are underperforming under the lacklustre Labour/Lib Dem Scottish Executive.
“The SNP will spend the next two months campaigning positively. If the people of Gordon trust me to be their MSP, and the people of Scotland put their trust in me as First Minister, I pledge that we will deliver successful representation for the area, and a successful government for Scotland.”

I think this is an achievable seat for the SNP, although it will take just about an 8% swing from the Lib Dems to get it.
However it will have to be a night of swings to the SNP if they have any hope of becoming the largest party.
Although Salmond's personality may make the swing in this constituency larger for the SNP than what may be replicated throughout the rest of Scotland.
