Exclusive: First Minister Alex Salmond targeted by 'letter bomber'
Mar 14 2009 By Keith Mcleod
ALEX Salmond was last night at the centre of a letter bomb scare.
Cops swooped on a suspected tartan terrorist after devices were sent to the First Minister and five other targets.
The Daily Record helped the police after taking a call from a man claiming to represent separatist terror group the Scottish National Liberation Army.
A 33-year-old man is expected to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday in connection with the alleged bomb campaign.
A force insider said: "This was no hoax. These devices were intended to cause fear and alarm. The man has been charged with sending various devices."
When he called the Record, the man said he had sent "letter bombs" to the First Minister at Edinburgh's Bute House, Lib Dem MSP Mike Rumbles, Glasgow City Chambers and the SNP's Edinburgh HQ.
He also claimed "devices" had been sent to two other unspecified targets in Scotland.
The man used a recognised code word during the call.
A source close to Salmond last night said there were no explosives in the letters but they had been designed to look like bombs.
Cops were called in and they last night raided a flat in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, where they arrested a 33-year-old man.

Why would someone wishing to see scottish independence send a "letter bomb" of Salmond, the man who is probably best placed to deliver independence at the current time ... seems a bit odd does it not?

You can't expect logic from the "SNLA". Their function is to discredit the independence movement, not to achieve independence. Seen in that light, they are doing their job, as bidden.

Tinfoil hats out.
I had a look at the Siol Nan Gael-something forum recently. One of their first responses to the news of the murder of two British soldiers in Northern Ireland was to suggest it was - in very similar language to that which you deploy - an MI5 'black op'. Do you believe that too? I wonder, do you believe that conspiracy theory about the Royal Family being a bunch of space-lizards?
You're all a bunch of cranks.

Because they disagree with his gradualist strategy? Because they think he's sold out by sustaining the government? Basically exactly what dissident republicans in Northern Ireland think.

Much as I see the SNP and their friends as sold out to the establishment I do not think Alex Salmond should be a target. I have no sympathy for those who deny us democracy such as we should be allowed a referendum. Unfortunately parliamentary politics is a slow way to deliver freedom and is full of minefields. Many younger people than myself are easily impressed by more radical solutions. Is it true Adam Busby is ill in an Irish jail? Sad and why the SNLA publicity is short lived with mere arrests. I know of one occasion they sent an email to the police to warn of an operation. Why email the cops and warn them? It is shooting yourself in the foot. True terrorists would target and kill cops not give them warnings beforehand?

That comment says nothing about what motivates these individuals to carry out attacks on politicians. I have a lot of respect for those who declare war with purpose and correct strategy. The trouble for the SNLA is that every operation ends up in arrests. The IRA successfully had many people on the run with safe houses nothing too amateur. The SNLA one man operations or small cell should have proved more difficult to break. But to take on the state you need support, resolve and numbers.

They're not taking on the state, they are the state (even though the wee numpties who end up in the jile don't realise it until it's too late).

Aren't they coming in a bit late in the game? I mean we've almost got independence, what do they think they'll achieve?

Oh, so you at least admit that Scottish nationalists are involved in the great conspiracy? With the added proviso of being obviously manipulated by the evil English Establishment, of course.

Wrong and oh so wrong.
Why do you think the term "numpty" applies to Scottish nationalists? Did I say any such thing? The SNLA dupes rather weak individuals and traps them in its pathetic web. These individuals need not be anything but easily manipulated. They certainly do not need to be nationalists of any description.
And as for your crack about the "evil English Establishment", you may think that but I do not. I never blame Scotland's problems on England and no matter how many times you try to put those words in my mouth they just will not fit there. It is nothing but a lie if you try to attribute those words to me.
I know the more feeble minded among us have trouble making the distinction, but can you say "United Kingdom"? Now try "England" for size. Can you see the difference? Can you tell the difference? I can, and I would like you to from now on.

Loonies, a few screws loose. Not well in the head. Get a grip. Come on, even the IRA realised this gets you nowhere, so go home, put your feet up, drink a glass of whisky, smile and leave the Scots to arrive at their own destination without dumbass distraction.
Alba go brath.
