Skillfully done. The way out of this sort of situation for Labour is to have fully separate Scottish and British party organizations with overlapping memberships that would make no apology for representing the interests of two differing electorates served by two parliaments with differing sets of responsibilities. As things stand there is inevitably going to be internal strain arising from branches of the same organization working at cross purposes in terms of enhancing their own election prospects. Unlikely to happen though as the prevailing mindset at Westminster is to view Holyrood as merely a form of local government rather than as a powerful national legislature.
Wendy Alexander's early referendum would maybe have put off the evil hour a bit on the question of party structure by weakening the other major party temporarily in the event of a No vote. It would not, however, have answered the underlying conundrum of how to deal with having political leaders in what purports to be a national parliament taking orders from political leaders in another parliament when the same party isn't in power in both legislatures.
