American Elections.

Well today is the day. Does anyone have a preference between the candidates. I'm an Obama hopeful.
Blackadder

Frankly ... if the American President is the leader of the Free World ... I want a vote! Evil or Very Mad

I liked it on Dr Who, when Harriet Jones, Prime Minister (yes, we know who you are! Very Happy) told the Septic President (who muscled in), she dosn't answer to him, when the Aliens were overhead in Britain!

Seriously though ... it's got to be Obama.  Does anyone know which part of Ireland his name comes from??
Alasdair

I'm with BA on this one ... I want the one who doesn't want to attack anyone who so much as looks at them sideways.  McCain strikes me as the sort of guy who would nuke iran in order to make a point ...
Blackadder

And don't forget the running mate ... Beyond the Palin!!! Twisted Evil

She's been quiet of late!!!  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
mairead

palin is really scary. Lord but what if McCain got in and then popped off. We'd have that empty head in charge of one of the biggest nations in the world. At least Hillary had a clue but Palin, I shiver.
Not only that but she now has a foot on the ladder, win or lose, so I hope Clinton does not retire early.
Blackadder

Oh I think Hillary will get back into things after Obama's assassination!!!
mairead

Well I hope Obama stays around for  a long time.
Blackadder

Or until Hillary has raised enough cash to pay for a decent assassin ... then ... BANG!!!  Twisted Evil
Babygael

I couldn't sleep so I waited to see Obama take his place as the new Prez Of the united States.... Yet another kleenex moment! Rolling Eyes

Congrats KV on your new Prez! Very Happy
Blackadder

Agree with BG ... congrats on choosing to make a historical decision, Kaffy ...
mairead

Yes, Congratulations from me too. I think the best man for the job, won it.
How uplifting to see that reason triumphed over race.
Blackadder

However you see it ... America changed today ... in fact by that one act ... the world changed today ...
Blackadder

You know ... it's such a great shame that Rosa Parks died in 2005.  She would have been so proud of Obama.  For me she's right up there with every woman who stood up for her rights, her race, and her country!

Interesting time in history!

It's a real shame Obama's Granny passed away Monday, I imagine it's a bittersweet time for his entire family now.

The thing that bothers me about Obama is the new VP, there have been seditious threats and at least one plot uncovered to assassinate the new Prez, and if that happens, we're stuck with Biden, Hilliary would have been a better running mate choice in that event. And no matter how much cash she raises, she can't buy the VP off, her only hope would be appointed as the new VP in the event Biden steps in as Prez. (Then I may have to head the next assassination committee to pop him off!)  Laughing

There were reports this morning that a certain amount of posturing has been done by Russia regarding their cold war nuclear weapon stocks, kind of like "OK new homeboy, we've got these and what do you think you can do about it, hummmmm?" I expect we'll see some of the same in other countries.

I am excited to see what comes, I think he will do a fine job, I just hope the mess he's getting isn't insurmountable.
Blackadder

History was made last night as Obama broke a long tradition and became the first black man to enter the White House without a mop and bucket!!! Twisted Evil
mairead

Kathy,
I think Obama may prove to be a bit tougher than the Russians and even the Americans think. I see a great deal of the late JFK in him.

Blackadder.
Yes it is a shame Rosa Parks did not live to see the day, also Martin Luther King, but did you see Jesse Jackson with the tears streming down his face.
By the way, did you see the bit on a report where one of the commentators was speaking to an ordinary black guy in the streets and the black guy shouted into the mike that black Americans needed to pull their pants up and get on with making something of their lives. I thought that was really good.
Blackadder

I thought that was just a little gross! Considering the obesity of most Americans ... seeing them with their pants (that's trousers to those of you who don't speak Mirrikin) down ... is something that would cause me to burn out my eyes with a Zippo!!! Evil or Very Mad
kathyv

There is a bit of truth to that comment by the black guy, but it isn't ONLY the Black Americans that need to do that. There is quite an element in the US of those who believe society owes them a good life, and all they should do is sit around with their hands out.

This doesn't endear them much to those who are working hard to keep their heads above water during financial crisis after financial crisis! It's hard enough right now to support yourself, with just the basics, without funding prime health care and steady meals to those who choose not to work.

I wish I could get my teeth fixed for free or afford steak every night on food stamps.

Contrary to what the media would have everyone believe, most of those on the dole aren't homeless or unable to work, MOST are people who just choose to live this way.

It's really sad. My dad worked his entire life to support his family, my hubby and I are doing the same now. I don't mind my taxes going to assist, to a certain degree, it is one way I can help my country and it's citizens, but not when we feel advantage is being taken and those being assisted don't do likewise.

We drove past a couple and their baby a year or 2 ago, in a store's parking lot. She held up a sign stating they needed to feed the baby, they weren't 'making' enough on the dole. He held up a sign that read, "Verbal abuse taken, $1 per word" The really sad thing was the store, who's parking lot they were in, had help wanted signs all over the front! Why didn't they pop in there and fill out an application? I wanted to ask but didn't have any cash!

Anyway, I think Obama will be a good example to all Americans, hopefully instilling a desire to be productive and to better themselves. AND pave the way for the means to improve self! Like you said mairead, he's very like JFK, and his legacy is still felt by many; the Peace Corps are still active, and many do ask how they can help their country.

We've lost a lot of that and I think Obama can bring it back.

"Course, the thought of their 'pants' (What we in Mirrikaland call underwear, undies, panties, shorts, skivvies, tighty whiteys), down is pretty gross as well!

Whatever you may call them . . .  PULL THEM UP!!!!! Embarassed
Blackadder

You might want shout that at a few of your corrupt senators!!! Twisted Evil
