RANGERS SUPPORT TROOPS WITH TICKET GIVEAWAY

In a UK first, Rangers Football Club has donated over 1,200 tickets to members of the Armed Forces for the Club’s Champions League tie against Unirea Urziceni at Ibrox Stadium next Tuesday. (20 October, 2009)

Having received confirmation from the Romanian side that they would not be taking up their allocation in the traditional away section, the Club has taken the unprecedented decision to offer this area of the ground to soldiers from The Army in Scotland in honour of their service to their country.

Rangers Chief Executive Martin Bain joined Manager Walter Smith, Brigadier David Allfrey, Commander 51 (Scottish) Brigade and soldiers from 51 (Scottish) Brigade, at Ibrox today (Thursday, 15 October 2009) to hand over the Champions League tickets worth almost £50,000.

The initiative is believed to be the first time a UK football club has donated an entire section of its ground to serving members of the Armed Forces and it follows a number of previous visits to Ibrox and Murray Park by members of the Army and Royal Marines.

Martin Bain commented: “This football club is totally committed to supporting and recognising these brave individuals. Once we learned Unirea would not be taking up their allocation in the away section at Ibrox we immediately thought of donating the tickets to The Army in Scotland. We all owe the members of the Armed Forces a huge debt of gratitude and our fans will give them a wonderful and deserved reception when they attend our European tie next Tuesday."

Walter Smith commented: “Footballers are often regarded as heroes but the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces are the true heroes in life and it will be our pleasure to welcome them to Ibrox."

Brigadier David Allfrey, Commander 51 (Scottish) Brigade, commented: “Wow! This is an extraordinary gesture by any standards! Football is a major passion across the Army and Scottish soldiers all have strong allegiances. Even Celtic fans across the Brigade have been taken aback by Rangers generosity!

“An evening at Ibrox is a wonderful opportunity for Rangers fans in the Army – along with many others who just enjoy the game or perhaps those who have never seen a game at this level before – to watch two of the best teams in Europe in an iconic stadium. We are all hugely appreciative of Rangers generosity and wish them well representing Scotland in the Champions League."

Andy Kerr, President of the Rangers Supporters Assembly, commented: “I am delighted that the Club has made this generous gesture to our Armed Forces personnel. The soldiers that attend the match will receive a fantastic welcome from the Rangers fans."

In recent months, the Rangers Charity Foundation has worked closely with veterans’ charities Poppyscotland and Erskine while the Club invited members of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland and Royal Marines from 45 Commando – who had just returned from front line duty in Afghanistan - to SPL matches at Ibrox.

In addition, Scottish soldiers based in Germany have been invited to Rangers training sessions both during pre-season tours and before European matches in the last couple of years.
Reluctant Hero

I am simply amazed by this gesture and I believe the rest of Scotland will be as well....
Shagpile

I'm not.

Following Gordy Broon's recently announced initiative, that's all.

Watch out for Ibrox being the only Scottish ground to host an Olympic fixture....... it's the ONLY STADIUM in the UK where a 'British Olympic Football Team' would not be 'Booed'..... the 'traditional fans' would even turn up with their England shirts donned for the occasion.
Reluctant Hero

Don't worry Shagpile, I was only kidding!

The only reason Rangers are giving them away is because

1.  They couldn't sell them and
2.  Thousands of empty seats for the "Premier European Footy Competition" wouldn't look very good on TV

Must admit I toiled with exactly both these points....

Then opted for the OG as the motive behind these points. Remember even the Mighty Gers are a wee bit black at the moment.

Hello, the real world in Scottish football!

Wow, crossed fingers will not prevent an OG. On a scale of 1-10, that's probably 42..... the exact number computed for the meaning of life.

"Landg" is beginning to sound like an intelligent being....... Pasta be upon him...... Gdang, gdang..... woops upthingyding.

it would be amazing to see an olympic football game at ibrox. i really hope it happens.
Stevie

Rangers suck!
The Lithgae Jambo

If a wee team from the wee county can do it, why not a big team from a big city ?

Stevie

Why not give police officers free tickets too?

The troops volunteered and as much as I admire their personal courage and heroism, they're not ridding the world of Hitler.
Stevie

Oh I forgot to say, Rangers still suck.
landg

celtic will hace several thousand empty seats at their game v hamburg (as they do most at all home games now) i hope they offer our  british servicemen some free tickets as a thank you gestrure. dr. john reid was a defence secetray so i'm sure he could sort something out.
Reluctant Hero

Must have been a good game for the servicemen and women to go to, seeing 5 goals.  Plus seeing a bit of history being made, the first ever Champions League win for Unirea Urziceni.
landg

shocking result but i know rangers fans are proud of the gesture by the club and our brave guests tonight will be grateful for own kindness and thanks. they give more than most, if not any.
Stevie

Suck.

hahahahahaha, problem with rangers and our servicemen eh?

The serviceman are fine but the sectarianism belongs in the litter bin of history.

Rangers are sectarian bigots (excepting the various foreign nationals who've played for the team).

do you mean the players?
the manager?
the chairman?
the fans?
all of them or just some of them?

there are a fair few secterian bigots within the old firm, they don't bother me mind you, easy to poke fun at and mock.

Our Servicemen and women should get a lot more than tickets to see repeatedly dire performances at Ibrox. What on earth, they must have been asking themselves, had the done to deserve that?

They should be exempt from paying income tax and council tax. They should travel free on public transport and should get a 50% rise in their paltry salaries.

I feel sorry for them, having to go to one of the most barbaric hell-holes in the world and get shot at and bombed.

In just seems endless and I think there should be a change in the rules of engagement where our soldiers have to fight these mysogynistic vermin with one hand tied behind their backs.

I feel they should receive the same befefits as some of our other public servants....... ie The tax Payer should provide them with 'second homes' in eg Afgahnistan; they ought to be able to have their second homes furnished with all the luxuries of their first homes (allowing of course for a bit of 'flipping') with such as plasma screen TVs so they can keep up to date with their laterst propaganda...... war on terror, stuff like that.

5% on top of their normal anual increases. Garden maintenance of their first address. Flipped to their second homes in theatre...... dead boddies in their moats I immagine would be a pain in the rear end, not to mention the distraction.

Yep.... good point Jamsie!

Ah but Jamsie.... that's a NATO/UN thingy. Westminster might have an input in that. What idiot is going to pay the slightest heed to GB? The credentials of failure litter his CV as a Chancellor and PM.
