Anniversary coin will be only official mark of Act of Union | Quote: | COMMEMORATIONS to mark the union of Scotland and England have been postponed until after May's election for fear they could become a "political football" if held prior to the crunch vote.
An exhibition to mark the 300-year-old event at the Scottish Parliament has been held back until September to ensure it begins after the dust has settled on the Holyrood poll.

Events being prepared by the National Museums and National Galleries of Scotland, along with seminars and official debates, will also be held back until after May.
The moves have been made despite the fact that the actual anniversary of the signing of the Act of Union in 1707 occurs on January 16.
One senior MSP said: "We didn't feel that it was appropriate to do anything before the election. There might be a political advantage to one or other party before the election so it has been held back till later in the year."
There is now growing anger among unionist politicians about the low-key nature of the events. They warn it means the full significance of the anniversary is not being taken into account.
The only official event on January 16 takes place in London, when Gordon Brown and Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander launch a commemorative £2 coin.
First Minister Jack McConnell is not understood to be attending the event and no Scottish Executive events have been arranged.
Shadow Scottish Secretary David Mundell said: "What's being proposed is totally inadequate for what was a seminal moment in the history of both our countries." |

Encouraging but I would have preferred them strutting around and shouting it from the rooftops. So what does the @rse end of this in memorium bawbee depict then? Mugshots of Mi Lud Stairs and others perhaps? I've heard that the price of scrap metal is quite high at the moment, now I wonder if it would be worth my while melting.............................

Nah - donate every commemorative £2 coin you come across to the independence party of your choice!

Well, the Treaty was signed on the 16th of January, but that's not exactly our nation's tricentennial or anything quite so dramatic. The Union only happened on May 1st.
While I would like an excuse for a decent piss up and some fireworks, I've never much cared for any sort of government-endorsed festivities. The best ones are the ones the state tries to stop (Christmas, Hogmanay etc)
Also, any sort of sensitivity about celebrating the Union and the 2007 election is ridiculous political correctness. If anyone's really that bothered, I'm sure the Secretary of State has statutory powers to delay the election...

Yes, let's delay the election until after a full-blown celebration of the Union. Anything to maximise the pro-independence vote!
