BNP support in poll sparks anger

I don't think he should of been allowed to appear on QT the BBC and individual politicians have provided him with unecessary publicity.

Nick Griffin is complaining he had faced a 'lynch mob'

Peter Hain says his fears have been proved right after a poll suggested support for the BNP has risen after Nick Griffin appeared on Question Time.

A YouGov poll in the Daily Telegraph suggests 22% of people questioned would "seriously consider" voting BNP.

The Welsh secretary said: "The BBC has handed the BNP the gift of the century on a plate and now we see the consequences. I'm very angry."

The show was watched by a record eight million people on Thursday.

The opinion poll carried out after Mr Griffin's appearance found 22% of voters would consider voting BNP in a future local, general or European election.

Two-thirds of the 1,314 people polled by YouGov for the Daily Telegraph dismissed voting for the party under any circumstances, with the rest unsure.

When asked how they would vote in an election tomorrow, the proportion supporting the BNP stood at 3%, up from 2% a month ago.

However, more than half of those polled said they agreed or thought the party had a point in speaking up for the interests of indigenous, white British people.

The poll did not ask whether their views were affected as a result of Mr Griffin's appearance on Question Time.

Complaints

Mr Hain, who campaigned against Mr Griffin being included in the Question Time panel, said: "This is exactly what I feared and warned about."

Mr Griffin's fellow panellists on the show said he had been "shown up," but critics said the show had given the BNP huge publicity.

The BNP claims 3,000 people registered to join the party during and after the broadcast.

More than 240 complainants to the BBC felt the show was biased against the BNP, while more than 100 complaints were about Mr Griffin being allowed to appear on Question Time.

However, more than 50 people contacted the BBC to show their appreciation for the programme.

Mr Griffin, who was one of two BNP candidates to be elected to the European Parliament earlier this year, faced robust questioning about his views on race, immigration and the Holocaust from a largely hostile audience.

He criticised Islam, defended a past head of the Ku Klux Klan but insisted that he was "not a Nazi".

Beautiful.  Not a jot said about why the bnp are gaining popularity.  Speaks volumes.

I think the BNP are a racist party but perhaps all their voters are not. The panel was weak on QT and Griffin was pathetic. The failure of the mainstream British parties is the reason the BNP get some support.

...except that the report doesn't actually say that what he warned about has come to pass.

There's absolutely nothing in it which suggests that Auld Nick's appearance affected voting intentions. The only statistic comparing support pre- and post- QT states that "when asked how they would vote in an election tomorrow, the proportion supporting the BNP stood at 3%, up from 2% a month ago" but that has to be qualified by the fact that the poll did not ask whether their views were affected as a result of the appearance on Question Time.

like I just said. Not a jot about the why.  The policies of the mainstream parties are the why of it. But hey-ho, and on with the show.

Yeah I agree with you LJ. Griffin has no bottle to debate his racist agenda. QT proved that and he looked a very weak leader. If the Straw man could get applause it merely showed up the weakness of the panel.
Fidget

He never got a chance to debate his racist agenda, more like.

No wonder denying the holocaust and representing a party of race. While some people may be disalussioned with the format of the programme Griffin was shown to lack the ability to hold debate. He is not very clever.

Remind me of the bit where anybody denying the holocaust was what QT was about.

I thought he had would need to watch it again. He in fact claimed he had changed his mind about the holocuast.

I don't believe for one instant that people deciding to vote BNP suddenly did so because of Ouestion Time.

The 22% was there waiting to happen.

Will they get that in a GE?  Don't know.

Do they have the potential to gain more than that... maybe upto 30+%.

Time to be rid of the first past the post system before the night of the long knives.

For goodness sake. "Nick Griffin changed his mind and wore a different colour of socks than those he had earlier said he would wear".
Aventinian

Those who oppose Griffin saw him as getting torn apart, those who support him saw him being stitched up. I don't think a great many people were convinced either way.

From an objective standpoint, he probably was taken for a ride by the BBC to an extent: it certainly wasn't a normal QT format, and the choice of location (London rather than, say, Bradford) was probably deliberate too. Still, he probably saw that coming and went on with it regardless.
