Breaking News: Ferguson/McGregor OUT for drinking session

Allan McGregor and Barry Ferguson, on returning to Scotland and the Cameron House Hotel on Loch Lomondside at 4am after the Holland game, instead of going to bed like everybody else, proceeded to go on a marathon drinking session at the bar.

They were still there at 12pm the next day.

Obviously, the manager George Burley, has dropped them. There is the issue of lack of sleep, apart from anything else.

What is it about Scottish sportsmen and drink?

You heard it here first!!
Rinty

Is this true?

I would have thought that MacGregor would have been dropped, as he was at fault for Hollands first two goals, both crosses into the 6-yard box from a long way out.

Havent heard anything about this event.

I didn't really think MacGregor was to blame for either goal.

Good to see that Burley has dropped these tossers though.

Burley's made the right decision in dropping these two, but, why were they even allowed to go for a drink at 4am? Surely, they'd have just fancied going straight to bed or even had a bevy on the flight? If they wanted a beer or something.
Rinty

I didnt say macGregor was to blame for either goal, I dont really think that goas end up being the blame of any one player apart from in occassional circumstances.

He was at fault at both goals, in my opinion, as any goalkeeper should be dealing with a cross from so far out that is to the 6-yard box, that is MacGregors weakness.

Anyway, tonight was excellent and we are back on track.

Exactly. You could see the difference having Gordon in made to the defence. He was coming for cross balls all night and took them easily.

I hope this isnt the end of Ferguson, he has made a mistake but it is a mistake we have seen in the past from the likes of McFadden and O'Connor.  He is good player and we need him, I hope he can apologise and get back into the team.

The thing with Ferguson is he is a target for people because such high expectations have been placed on him his whole career.

When he is playing well the Scottish press and the Rangers support overplay it and he becomes our greatest living hero.  When he is off form he becomes the worst player in history.

We have a good batch of midfielders at the moment with some even better ones coming through.  But for this campaign we need Ferguson, Fletcher, Brown, Hartley, Robson and Thomson to be fit and available.  From that bunch we can field 2 or 3 central midfeileders that can hold their own on the big stage.

Burley has now had the same start as Vogts, 7 pts from 4 matches, and 2 wins against Iceland.  Smith did worse, his first four competitive matches gve us 5 points, McLeish did better, winning 3 of his first 4 competitive matches.

Given the players that Burley had missing for this double-header, I think it's a pretty good start.  And we have the bonus of some young players staking a strong claim, like McCormack, Fletcher and Berra.

I am optimistic that we can get to the play-offs and possibly the finals.

Burley has a great record in getting the best out of limited squads, I am confident he can do with Scotland what he did in club football.  If we want a guy who can get teams to the play-offs he has done it 5 times in the championship with 3 different teams.  He won the Premiership Manager of the Year for taking Ipswich to 5th in the premiership, the only manager to win it whose team didnt win the title.

To me this shows a guy who can forge a good team with limited resources, exactly what Scotland need.

Impressive summary!

Apparently they apologised to Burley. Had they not done so, they'd have been on the bus home and not the one to Hampden......

....where they showed the apology to mean nothing.

I think that was aimed at the media, not the fans or Burley.

if it was then good for them.

And another point should not be missed: Iceland are not a wee diddy team.

They had four players who play in the premier league and one who plays for, arguably, the best team on the planet - Barca.

Apart from Fletcher who did we have from the 'best league in the world' ?

Morrison - a newcomer from the bottom of the league team, West Brom.

Hutton, a marvellous player but just back from a long spell injured.

And Gordon - in the reserves at Sunderland for most of the season.

So to win this one with such a cobbled-together team is more than a fair result, in my opinion.
Reluctant Hero

I think the SFA may have gone a bit far in banning Ferguson and McGregor for life.  Maybe if they banned them until the end of this qualifying campaign, then that would have been fair punishment, by this just seems to be OTT.
Cymro

To be honest I think they where asking for it, personally I think loosing McGregor is more of a hit for Scotland than loosing Ferguson. Ferguson is way passed his best and Scotland seemingly have enough talented holding midfielders who are capable of taking that place. McGregor though is a very talented keeper and with Gordon struggling to hold down a regular place in a Sunderland side who could well be relegated to the Championship this season there is argument that McGregor is needed now more than ever.
Rinty

I would agree to an extent re MacGregor.  I think Ferguson is a better player than his current critics are saying but MacGregor is a good bit better than the rest of our keepers.  Gordon is better than McGregor ut the next group of contenders, Marshall, Turner, Combe, Langfield, Alexander are good, but not as good as macGregor.
