Brian Montieth Says Bring On ReferendumLet's hope his oposition to independence is as successful as his Think Twice campaign was in the 1997 referendum
| Quote: | | While Thatcherism brought modernisation, individual liberation and economic progress in Scotland, we have never recognised the good it did us. Instead we have created a whole mythology built on the painful social price that had to be paid – a price, I may add, that was made expensive by the cumulative mistakes of premiers from Macmillan through to Callaghan. |
Macmillan and Callaghan had so much to do with the introduction of the poll tax, the manifestation of greed, the destruction of industries (most notably coal), the elimination of decent council housing
| Quote: | A couple of weeks back I wrote about how Alistair Darling's new £30,000 poll tax on all British residents with non-domestic earnings would hurt Edinburgh as well as the City of London. It didn't take long before the evidence backed me up.
|
On the one hand he is praising Thatcherism to the hilt, then he is using the poll tax in a derogatory fashion. I wish he would make up his mind.
| Quote: | If it's to be in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland then let's commit to that and tell our politicians to stop pontificating about which constitutional set-up we should have.
|
That is easy to say, now that his (ex) party has fallen out of be with the Unionist "convention".
| Quote: | If it's to be an independent Scotland then fine, but let's hear what it will be like – rather than pretend it can be a socialist nirvana, an Albania with (depleting) oil for the MacComrades, or a tax haven, a wet and windy Dubai for the MacThatchers.

That is what I like to see, confidence in your country!! This guy should disappear back to what he is good at - stabbing people in the back.

Could be mistaken, but I thought sure I read somewhere that the Tories are no longer part of it.

Brian Monteith was sitting in the row opposite from me on a flight from Iceland to Scotland last week. He details his little trip here:

I don't know why that's relevant suffice to say

It did nothing of the sort. Mrs Thatcher didn't practice Thatcherism in her Scottish policy, for reasons only known to her. It perhaps has something to do with the then Secretary of State for Scotland, Malcolm Rifkind, not being especially fond of her and a lot of what she did.
