British Olympic Football Team

At last, U-Turns all round, common sense has prevailed.

Yea, who would support a British team anyway.... some English, and Celtic traitors.
Perhaps many English people would rather have England competing as a real nation.
Scotland should have it's own team at the Olympics, as should Cymru/Wales and Kernow/Cornwall.

Absolutely. It sends messages around the world that the UK is England! Blatter is sidestepping FIFA's internal polotics that there should be a single British team. His successor will still be able to claim that the UK can be represented by a single 'British Team'. Dispite previous assurances that participation by the other FAs in a combined team would not damage their independent status. Double speak! IMHO, the precident is still made.

FIFA should respect and assure the independence of their constituent FAs and tell the IOC they should not recognise England as the British FA. Otherwise they will not recognise the Olympic Games as an International Footballing Competition. Would that not fall to the Ethics Committee though? Chaired by their very own..... Lord Coe!

As for Nu Liebours political interference in sport so we can all be proud to be British....... This will not work. Scotland will be home to England representing Britain! Perhaps the SFA should instruct the clubs that their grounds should not be used for this threat to their identity and independence within FIFA?

Every Labour Minister reponsible for sport; and English sport sinse devolution. Has wanted a British Football Team. The Successfull London bid for the Olympics has neatly provided them with the platform.

British Government need to be careful of meddling too much - political interference in football is a big no no for FIFA.

Plus, why SHOULD Scoltand be given preferential treatment over other nations who desire but cannot have a national team?

As per their Articles of Association. As per the IOCs too. Yet their actions seem to suggest otherwise.

Olympics don't but football does. If FIFA feel that the FAW, SFA and the IFA are being coerced into linking up for the Olympics then I'd imagine FIFA would be well within their rights to flex some muscle, they've been threatening Spain with expulsion out of Euro 08 recently eventhough technically that's an UEFA issue not FIFA, also Serbia too I think.

Scotland shouldn't have preferencial treatment to say the Basque country or even Gibraltar but at the end of the day Scotland has it's own FA, while the Basques should that's not a justification for removing that enjoyed by the so called home nations. I want a Welsh Parliament, I'm not advocating removing Scotlands until Wales gets one though!

FIFA is the Footbal's governing body though, they have to sanction any footballing tournament.

I don't believe Scotland would be receiving preferential treatment though. The interests of the Welsh and NI FAs would also be respected.

I have a great deal of sympathy for the nations who desire but cannot have a national team, but with the greatest respect to them, I don't want Scotland to be in the same boat. That's all.

Which means ofcourse, England should host the football! What right does the FA have to run the tournament in Scotland?

If the government wants Scotland to host the football part of the games, should that not fall to the SFA?

Anything less would be a breach of FIFA and the IOC rules. What a beautiful slap in the face to Gordy Broon, the unethical Lord Coe whos'; lets face it, was nothing more than a 'Britishness' political stunt.

My feeling is that if the FA insist that they really want to this, it MUST be held in England, where they have the international mandate to host the tounament on behalf of the IOC.

Scotland ofcourse as part of 'Britain' would have nothing. The Nationalists could not have hoped for such a spectacular 'own goal'!
