Carnage during London Underground alcohol party

New London Mayor, Boris Johnson, has banned alcohol from all of London's public transport - the law comes into effect from today.

Last night, the last night ever that alcohol is allowed on the London Underground, loads of revellers went on a drunken rampage on the Tube....

A party to celebrate the last night before Boris Johnson's ban on drinking alcohol on the London Underground caused widespread disruption with six stations having to be closed and 17 people arrested.

As thousands of revellers poured onto the network, four train drivers and three other London Underground staff were assaulted, one police vehicle was damaged and two officers assaulted and another injured. A number of trains were also damaged.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said 17 people were arrested for offences such as assault, drunk and disorderly, assault on police, public order-related offences and drug offences.

From today open containers of beer, wine and spirits are banned from the Tube, London buses, Docklands Light Railway and tram services across the capital.

But a night that started in a celebratory mood soon turned sour as thousands of revellers poured into London's Tube stations.

Liverpool Street, Euston, Euston Square, Aldgate, Gloucester Road and Baker Street were closed as the party turned violent.

A Transport Police spokesman said there was a "large amount" of disorder reported to police and "multiple instances" of trains being damaged" leading to them being withdrawn from service.

"This was an unfortunate end to what should have been a fun event," he added.

The celebration, heavily promted on Facebook and other social networking sites, got under way at 8.30pm from Liverpool Street Station, centred on the Circle Line but soon spread to other parts of the network.

One reveller, David Mudkips, 25, a web programmer from Hackney, east London, said the night began well: "Like rush hour but fun. There were people's sweaty armpits in my face but I didn't care because I was drinking."

But the situation quickly became unpleasant for many travellers with drinkers pulling down adverts and vomiting in carriages.

"It was bad enough for me but if I had been a mother with children or a tourist coming home from a night out in the West End it would have been a nightmare," said photographer Desmond Fitzgerald.

This seems a mysterious departure from your usual vague line about how good English stuff is? Had a bump on the head have we?

I was sure he was going to tell us it was a Scotsman's fault somehow.
Aventinian

Hardly a disaster, is it?

I was waiting for something along the lines of Ken Livingstone's father was a Scotsman... etc

Today the London tube still exists.
Alcohol still exists,
and suprisingly enough to Daily Mail readers parties still happen.

The fact that next new years eve Boris will have bouncers on the tube trying to stop and failing from any members of the public to take a two second, for example, swig from a can of beer or whatever, is as pointless as gesture politics can get.

Perhaps the point is that, like everything else, London parties better than Scotland too!!!?!
doodells

sounded like a good laugh.

So many people in London spend so much time on  the tube that I think its great if they want to take a trip and have a party on the tube. OK no drinking from now on, but you cant exactly blame them for wanting to end it with a big party........

I was also waiting for the;

''..... 17 people arrested, all scotch by the way.....''
