CRISIS WON'T STOP USThe latest crisis over the Scottish budget raises a possibility that there could be a general election for the Scottish Parliament within a couple of months. I have to say that I can understand the Greens' objections to the budget, which seem quite principled, unlike those of the more opportunistic Labour and the Lib Dems.
I don't know if anybody else has commented on this on the Our Scotland forum, but the Sunday Times "Ecosse" section a few days ago had a double-page article by Joan MacAlpine based on an interview with Alex Salmond and headed "CRISIS WON'T STOP US GOING IT ALONE". This was referring to the global financial crisis, not to the more recent local difficulties over the Scottish budget, but I presume the same thing applies to the latest developments, only more so, if anything.
Now, personally, I have for years been in favour of a referendum on independence "now", that is to say, without any un-necessary delay. And yes, it does look to me like there has been some un-necessary delay. But at least it's good that Salmond says the financial crisis won't cause any additional delay. Joan MacAlpine writes | Quote: | | He will stick to his timetable of holding an independence referendum on Saint Andrews day next year. | She quotes Alex Salmond as saying | Quote: | | I dare say there's lots of folk who will use it politically and say "Oh, ye cannae be independent cause Scottish banks got into trouble". On that basis, America wouldn't be independent at the present moment. | And continuing with the American analogy, Salmond says | Quote: | | The case for optimism sometimes emerges even stronger in the middle of a crisis. American unemployment is much higher, American poverty is much greater than ours, yet, in the context of the biggest crisis, an election was conducted on a platform of hope or fear. Hope won. | Hope can win. I've been saying that for years.
REFERENDUM NOW - INDEPENDENCE - YES OR NO
