Election Day Newspapers, 3rd may

some of them just flashed up on the screen on newsnight...

The Scotsman "Now its over to You!" with photos from throughout the campaign. Looks fairly neutral but dunno what the editorial will say?

The Herald - nothing dramatic on that front page. Leads with Shirly McKie case and some election chat at the top.

The Times, big photo of Alex Salmond. Seems fairly positive without knowing the text that goes with it!

Telegraph, leads with the You Gov poll lead for the SNP

If im not mistaken they mentioned something positive about The Sun but I never saw the front page?? Anyone know?
SLG

Poll is something like the SNP in a 6% lead in the constituency and 5% on the list.
SLG

That's made me feel so much better. I was getting really nervous after yesterday's poll. 6 and 5% would fit much better with the other polls.
William_Cleland

Very interesting things start to happen when the SNP are above 35% and Labour are below 30%. A Labour narrow win based on domination of the constituency section in the three west central Scotland regions that can't be compensated for by the d'Hondt system as there are not enough regional seats and an unprecedented SNP landslide in the constituency section are outcomes that lie within the margin of errors of the polls right now.
SLG

Thursday's Telegraph is up, but can't see the poll.
SLG

Herald up as well now. Fairly low key and neutral. Editorial not endorsing anyone. A bit disdainful of the SNP's campaign I though, but not bad. Has a bit of a go at Labour for their London based campaign, but that seems to be about it.

Yougov numbers from The Scotsman:-

http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/politics.cfm?id=682462007

Last night the final poll of the campaign gave the SNP a comfortable lead with 37 per cent on the constituency vote to Labour's 31 per cent, and 32 per cent on the regional vote to Labour's 27.

The YouGov poll for the Daily Telegraph gave the Conservatives 13 per cent and 10 per cent, the Lib Dems 14 per cent and 13 per cent, with the Greens on 9 per cent and the others also on 9 per cent.

Translated into seats, the SNP would have 45 seats to Labour's 39, the Conservatives 17, the Lib Dems 16, the Greens 9 and others 3.

However, this would leave the SNP and the Liberal Democrats with too few seats to form a coalition on their own - they would need the Greens to have a majority.

Here's The Telegraph poll. Big difference from The Scotsman's of the previous day.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/m...xml=/news/2007/05/03/npoll103.xml

I'm told The Scotsman instructed the pollsters they were not to take the poll in Edinburgh but take in a safe Labour seat in Glasgow.

And even a Labour/Lib Dem/SGP coalition would be 1 short (I think) of a majority.

The Sun's front page was predictable:

"Vote for the SNP today and you put Scotland's head in the noose"

Just hope people don't like being told what to do and make up their own minds on how they should vote.
George

The Herald have labour spin (20% undecided) as their headline.

They also state that bookmakers have lengthened the odds on an SNP win.

A statement from William Hill's bookmakers contradicts The Heralds view on the way the odds have moved:

Quote:
William Hill now make the SNP the shortest odds they have been to emerge as the largest single Party - cutting them from 4/7 to 4/9 favourites.

Note here the odds have been cut and not lengthened as The Herald have stated.

Also I stated on another thread that no high street bookmaker were now offering odds.........I was clearly wrong.

The Daily Record was predictably appalling today...

"Today's election is not about war in Iraq. It is not about Tony Blair. It is about who will run Scotland. It is about schools, hospitals and law and order. Do not sleepwalk into independence. Do not let a protest vote break up Britain. THINK ABOUT IT"

With a nice graphic of Britain being split in two.

The inside is quite laughable...it has various stories on the disasters that will befall us if Labour do not win, and has a nice little story on 'Smug Alex' taking the election for granted because he is travelling by helicopter..."we can only guess it's so he can look down on the whole of Scotland. He's certainly getting above himself"...all the while Jack McConnell "rolled up his sleeves and met voters on the ground" Laughing

The Sun headline is a shocker. The SNP logo has been textured into a noose. The noose is against a yellow background and takes up almost all of the front page. From a distance it could actually look like an endorsement since its got the logo and colours. But up close it is ghastly and is accompanied with bold warnings about tax, jobs and other matters. The noose oversteps the mark. I've been telling people all day that this is what we are up against and why can't we have a normal debate without people getting hystrical. I don't think people would switch votes over a headline... but i do think it might turn some undecided thickos off voiing at all. Maybe thats not a bad thing.

Bill Bryson Shocked That's what I thought too azzuri! wisnaeme wot's up lad? Laughing Laughing Laughing

The way I look at it, the Record is begging people to vote Labour, despite all the good reasons they have not to. This is similar to Jack on his soapbox at the weekend that the SoS was ridiculing. I think all this will do is remind people why they had decided not to vote Labour in the first place.

As for the Sun, and the Record, the rest of it is scare-mongering. This has been going on right throughout the campaign and the SNP are still ahead in the polls. I don't think this will turn people off the SNP now.

I just really hope that if we can get Labour out, that the new Executive slashed government advertising in the Record and they go bust. That would be another day worthy of celebration!

The daily mail's front page was even more shocking with a pic of Alex and a massive headline "this is the man who wants to destroy Britain" lol

I swear I'll take a week off work and have a week-long party if that happens.

Death to the Daily Retard!

Worth bearing in mind that in the 1930s "Hurrah for the Black Shirts" was once used as their main front page headline.
agentmancuso

Worse still, they also campaigned in 1938 to prevent Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany from coming to Britain. Stirring up resentment about 'asylum seekers' and 'illegal immigrants' is nothing new for them.
