Ferry disaster

So it looks as though up to 1000 travellers will have died with the sinking of the Egyptian ferry in the Red Sea. It seems to be the case that the ferry was an old style ro-ro that used to run to Sicily, but was sold off after a couple of major disasters in Europe led to a change in the law across the EU leading to that type of ferry being deemed unsafe. Apparently this was common practice whereby obsolete ferries were sold to 'third-world' countries where there wasn't such strict legislation.

I find that absolutely disgusting that equipment found to be unsafe to the extent that is has be classed as partly responsible for the loss of life should be allowed to be sold off and used elsewhere. If it is illegal for use in the EU then it should be illegal for companies based in the EU to sell the same goods for use elsewhere.

It IS disgusting.
It is yet another example of the ways the third world countries are being abused and exploited (also by their own governments!). The ship wreck beach in India is also such an example. People (children, women) work in dangerous waste products in wrecking these ships. No protections or rules whatsoever Confused

Perhaps a case for Egypt joining the EU...
