Flag pole

Anyone know of a good place to buy a flag pole, and how much it might cost? Probably looking for something about 20 feet tall.

Make one!

69 quid for a 20ft flagpole here -

ignore the flag that's flying on it though. Smile

How difficult could it be to make one? It's not for me, but I'll suggest that. £69 doesnae sound too bad though. Cheers.

It's actually trickier than you'd think to make a working one of decent size.

I have a 25 footer. I opted for fibreglass over aluminium as it renders it maintainance free. If you're thinking of sticking it in your front garden, you might want to consider an internal halyard system to stop your flag getting nicked by the locals returning from the pub, even though it's expensive. The ones with support ropes cost less too, but obviously take up more space.

And don't believe any salesman who tells you that you need to shell out for a proper, sewn flag instead of one of the £5 variety. Keep at least two of the cheap ones and replace when its worn out (this takes a lot longer than they'll lead you to believe). I also keep a giant 6' by 9' Union Jack for special occasions Very Happy

Oh yes, and you do technically need planning permission for these things. Mine bothers no one, so I haven't ever requested it.

Finally, if you want to go overboard with flag ettiquette, then you're supposed to lower it at sunset or floodlight during the night.

search on ebay

I was hoping you'd come up with some detail Aventinian Smile . It's not for me, I couldn't do much with it in my city flat. But it will be going up in the country, so no danger of returning pub goers nicking it. I don't think there's that much call for planning permision, it's a fairly rural location. I don't think there will be too much call for flag etiquette either! And definitely no Union Jack!

Cheers for the ebay link timeisnow. Looks like I should be able to pick one up there cheap enough.

It bothers me Aventinian..
Tell me where it is, and I'll have my complaint in by tomorrow morning! Very Happy

My flagpole is the aluminium tube from an old rotary drier, spray painted white and stuck on the side of the garage. Flag is held on with two ratchet straps Cool Easy peasy.

Here's another wee idea - my parents have a yacht and all boats have flagpoles - the marina where we dock alwaya has a few spare ones lying about so why not check out marinas and harbours if there is one near you?

Might find what you are looking for and they might give you it for free as long you don't tell them you are a Socialist (tee hee!).

Your parents have a WHAT?
You really know how to wind people up don't you? That'll go down well with the SSP guys! Shocked

Scarper, they're coming to claim it in the name of the revolution!

Things never to admit to on an Internet Forum
My mistakes, other people's mistakes, and hypotheticals

1. Any close family member owning a yacht/helicopter/any other form of sea/air transport except a fishing boat.

2. A secret lust for any politician.

3. A secret lust for any SPL footballer.

4. Wearing nail varnish/lippy (for men)

And so on.

By the way, if anyone does attempt a Revolution, can we borrow the yacht to use as a gunboat to bombard revolutionary forces?

Oi! you winding me up!!!!??

1. Well my family have had a yacht for ages and it is brill!

2. Have already admitted to fancying a YSI member who I believe is called Jamie something or whatever (by the way one of my friends who IS in the YSI told me they were slagging us all off on some secret forum they have when we were having our discussion on their text referendum. They also told me that girl with the black gothy hair was well pissed off...!)

3. Nope. Did once go out with a guy who played for Bristol Rovers who I met on hols. Does that count?

4. All the time! Also on polling day I always wear yellow and black nail varnish on alternate fingers which I admit is a bit sad!!!!

Also not sure about that socialist thing - sorry must have confosed you with someone else! Will try and come up with 4 things guys should not do for tomorrow but off to beddies now!!

I'm winding you up on Point 1. Very Happy The rest are a collection of confessions that myself and other people have made and lived to regret.

Oh, and I'm assuming that with a user name like Katie, you're a woman, so you can admit to Number 4 without too much difficulty.

Reminds me of a part about students who didn't quite 'get it' in that book Things Can Only Get Better: 18 Miserable Years in the Life of a Labour Supporter (John O'Farrell if I remember, worth a read anyway). Some girl mentioned her mum's friend complaining about the rates bill on an 8 bedroom house - apparently a mistake on two fronts when you're around socialists...
