Gaelic - Learning.

Hallo a h-uile duine,  Hi Folks

I'm not sure how many folk on here speak Gaelic, but I thought maybe we could start a thread that people can write some basics down to help others from the site who are in the process of learning Gaelic, or even just interested in learning a few basic phrases.

It can be almost, a wee page about where our interest in Gaelic stems from and some useful links/hints/tips we can post to each other to help learn.

If someone is quite fluent on Gaelic, I am a basic learner and will do my best to help anyone with some info that I know.

Suppose, I'll start..

's mise Caoimhin..    Very Happy

Halo a' GhunCheloc,

Ciamar a tha sibh?

Nice and steady, Wink start..

P.S. How do you get the gravs/accents on the letters on the vowels?

I have a German keyboard Very Happy

I'm told the Irish or US keyboards will also work.

Alternatively, you can press the left ALT key and type in the ASCII codes for the accented vowels on the number pad.

http://www.ascii-code.com/

e.g. that should be ALT+ 0192 for an À. Don't forget to add the leading zero or you will get └

Gle mhath.

A good tip is to check out BBC Alba's site and especially features such 'beag air bheag' or 'an litir bheag' that feature text and speech. Build it up from there. Have Radio nan Gaidheal going in the background. Read magazines like Cothrom from the group Cli Gàidhlig.

Gu math a theid leat.

Tapadh leibh, A' Chalium.  Ciamar a tha sibh?

Tha mi ag Ionnsachadh ri Beag air Bheag, Speaking Our Language agus Teach Yourself Gaelic.  Cuideachd, Tha Mi ag eisteachd ri Redio Nan Gaidheal.

P.S. My Grammar is pretty wild though.
How do I get Cohtrom from Cli Gaidhlig? Do any Shops buy it?

You can get it here: http://iletec.co.uk/clinew/cothrom.asp

Thank you for the link, Smile

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a querry, I am currently working through a workbook, and found what I think is two different ways of saying the same thing..

''Tha mi a' smaoineachadh GUR E Nurs a tha ann am Mairi''

But, a few Chapters earlier, I thought that it was

''Tha mi a' smaoineachadh GU BHEIL Thu Posda''

Can anyone explain this for me, as the Book doesn't give an indication why one statement is Gur e and the other is Gu Bheil.

Many thanks in advance to you all on here, who put time and effort in to help learners like myself.

it's the two different ways of expressing 'to be' - a bit like Spanish has.

s e/ gur e/ nach e - for discussing what a thing is

tha/ gu bheil/ nach eil - for talking about it, describing it

i.e.

S e bord a th'ann. Tha e ard.

A bheil thu a' tuigsinn?!

Cum ort!

Tapadh liebh, a Challium. Smile
