Gordon Brown recently attended an England match....And was cheering for us.
Is that treason from your point of views?
I was in shock when I heard about it - and also gutted for you when England didn't qualify for Euro 2008, as you will have nobody to support would have played us.
So, Gordon Brown?
See You En Tee?; or...
Mastermind with a cunning plan?

Richie,
Who have England played recently was it the Croatia game you refer?
In terms of him cheering on England, well he has famously said in the media down here that he supports England as a home nation as much as Scotland, this is no surprise. But you must view it in the context of him trying to woo middle England to keep him and his party in power in England. The re-invention of Britishness and the wrapping himself in the union flag is part and parcel of this.
He is in a no win situation - disliked by Tory England for being a Scot and disowned by his own countrymen for selling out and pandering to middle England.
Illustrates the discord in the UK, don't you think? Independence erases the jealousies and ambiguity of the UK.

I really don't care all that much.
I watch football and rugby. When Scotland isn't playing, I'll happily support England. I don't really give much of a damn if others do or do not.
However, as Prime Minister, Gordon Brown effectively has to support the home nations, and as such it is quite right and proper that he appeared at the game.

You know, the vast majority of the British electorate, north or south of the border, don't give a crap about these petty matters of personality politics. I don't hold the electorate in high regard, but all the same - Gordon Brown is unpopular because he is a charisma-free, dithering idiot who's made an enormous c**k up of his time as Prime Minister.
If I think about it, I still don't think of him as Prime Minister. If I could make that mental leap, I'd probably despair at the state of the nation.

Rather like the final solution would've erased anti-semitism?

Yep (if memory serves me correct, and I should know this). He also went to a Rugby game to support England.
The bloke is a tw@t.
If he did the decent thing like a true Scot, he would have turned up wearing a Scotland shirt, looked into the screwed up little winging faces of the Enland fans, cheered for the opposition - then said "fk you, you wee little English cvunts, I'm glad you've lost!"
However, He's a politition - so I suppose he had to look sad like the rest of us.

Yes high political office is a demanding mistress as the Gordmeister could tell you.
To answer your first question, I think it perfectly reasonable that Broon supports the England fitbaw and rugger teams, if Broon thinks himself fit to be the Heid Bummer of the English people then he should be prepared to put on a show of support at such occasions as fitbaw and rugger matches. That is what Heid Bummer's do these days, though I don't think Thatcher or Johnny Major felt obliged to do so.
Afterall I doubt Davie Cameron would find it a problem to leap to his feet and shout "well played sir!" during a Scotland match where a member of the Scotland team in someway distinguished himself on the field of play, and doubt many Englishmen would think such a display inappropriate.
Like Aventinian I think the matter of who people support in fitbaw matches is too trivial a matter to impact on politics and I am sure Bill Shankly was not being serious.

Of course echo too the personalty politics.
The key point has been made though, that previous PM's have not made the point of supporting another home nation so openly.
Again, it is my own opinion, but I believe that he thinks he is somehow making himself look more palatable to the English electorate if he openly supports England at sports events!

Aventinian,
I am surprised you support Scotland at all - it doesn't have the words British or Britain or United Kingdom contained within it!
