Gordon Brown wanted to keep top job from McConnellBlunkett's diary tells of 'bid' to keep top job from McConnell
RELATIONS between Jack McConnell and Gordon Brown were damaged yesterday by fresh claims that the Chancellor had worked hard behind the scenes to stop Mr McConnell becoming First Minister.
David Blunkett, the former home secretary, disclosed in his diaries that Mr Brown did everything he could to secure the First Minister's job for Wendy Alexander, his long-term friend and ally - who was considering running against Mr McConnell in 2001.
Mr Brown even tried to get unions to override the normal electoral-college process in an attempt to stop Mr McConnell replacing the disgraced Henry McLeish as First Minister.
Mr Blunkett revealed that, when Ms Alexander refused to run against Mr McConnell, Mr Brown responded by falling into a foul and angry mood.
The diaries also show how dismissive other Cabinet members were of Ms Alexander, with John Reid saying she would have been a "phone-a-friend First Minister" had she been elected - a caustic comment on her close relationship with Mr Brown.
