Great Quotes ...

I love using quotations.  I discovered them when I did essays in school.  And was sold completely.

Have you got any faves?  Because I'm a reader I have hundreds.

Here's one of my top ones ...

"I will show you fear in a handful of dust!" from TS Eliot's The Wasteland.

If you haven't read it, you might find it online.

Live for today, tomoorow may never come.      Don't know who said that though.
Blackadder

Mairead ... the sentiment has been around a long time in various wordings since 85 ce.

For instance ... It is not wise, believe me to say, "I shall live." Too late is tomorrow's life: live thou today (None est, crede mihi, sapientis dicere "vivam"; sera nimis vita est crastina: vive hodie))~Martial, Epigrams, bk. I, epig. 15. (85c.e.)

"To the last, I grapple with thee; From Hell's heart, I stab at thee; For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee."

Who said that?  (Careful now .... it IS a trick question! So Carol won't get it!  Laughing )
macnumpty

It's either Captain Ahab or Khan. Possibly both. Razz

"I wasn't cut out do be a bureaucrat anyway! I'm only anal 78.29% of the time!"

Who said that?
Blackadder

Correctamundo, Macnumpters!

Often wrongly attributed to Shakespeare, it was Herman Melville who wrote "Moby Dick", putting these very quotable words into the mouth of Captain Ahab in his war against the Great White Whale ... we know as Carol!  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing

The writers of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (the best of the movies) stole the quote for the brilliant death scene of Khan Noonien Singh as he tries to kill Kirk and crew in the Mutara Nebula. He says the line as he stabs at the button that explodes the Genesis device. Without a doubt, Ricardo Montalban's best ever performance in any movie or TV he ever did or will do again.  He shoulda got an Oscar for that!

Quote:
"I wasn't cut out do be a bureaucrat anyway! I'm only anal 78.29% of the time!"

It could be you, Macnumpty, but you're anal 99.9% of the time!  Laughing  Laughing
macnumpty

Now, BA, that's not strictly true... Wink

Besides, the answer was Hermes Conrad, in Futurama. Very Happy

Also Monty Burns uses "From Hell's heart, I stab at thee" at some point... when he's switching the power to Springfield off, I think. Razz

One more thing... STII was not the best of the movies, it was the second best. First Contact was absolutely by far and away the best!
Blackadder

Don't watch Futurama ... cos I don't got SkyOne.  Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad

That's correct ... the old git said "Goodbye Springfield. From Hell’s heart I stab at thee."

I have to correct you though. First Contact (even tough it was a bit of a crossover) was the first of the TNG movies and yes it was the best of that bunch. But the first six were all TOS ... and STII was the best of that lot.

And your banal anality is most likely 99.99999999999%, isn't it?
macnumpty

Awwww... well it pops up on Channel 4 occasionally. I would recommend it, when you find it on!

And ST:FC stands out as the best of the ten for me. Though the other TNG films were pretty ropey. ST:G was just a vehicle for the crossover, ST:I would have been better as an episode during Season 7 when they were running out of ideas and ST:N was a good idea wasted.

What's your take on this prequel they're woking on anyway?
Blackadder

All of the Next Gen movies were like double episodes.  The trouble with Nemesis was that it was a mess ... both the science and the plot were awful ... and the acting ropey. I was not a happy bunny when I saw it!

Frankly I don't see the need for prequels. ST:E was a mistake. The casting of Bakula was wrong on so many levels. He'll always be Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap. Yes, some fan-questions got answered in that series ... but it was not well produced or written.

I withhold judgement on the movie prequel at the moment. Sylar as young Spock is interesting casting. But generally, I'm not in favour. We should have gone ahead another 100 years into the future with a new Star Trek series ...

Anyway ... who said, "I saw weird stuff in that place last night. Weird, strange, sick, twisted, eerie, Godless, evil stuff! ... And I want in!"
macnumpty

That was Homer, to Lenny and Carl, on his attempt to join the Stonecutters. Luckily for him, Abe is a member. He's also an elk, a mason, a Communist and the President of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance "for some reason". Very Happy

And Re: Enterprise, I have only three words: Just. Plain. Wrong.

And to be honest everytime I look at Spock in the prequel I'm going to think of him opening someone's skull with the power of his mind. Confused

Personally, I'd have liked them to do something DS9-related. Maybe a mini-series. That'd be a good way of keeping the franchise going and it's how the new BSG got off the ground...

Anyway, who said, "I'm gonna do stuff to you you won't remember till you're forty!"
azzuri

I'm going to throw a 'serious' grenade into the mix....

"The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis." - Dante Alighieri

Very Happy
Blackadder

I detest the new BSG. All those English nanes for a start are just. plain. wrong. Plus I wanted REAL Cylons and the Egyptian style Vipers and Helmets! Aaarrgghh!!!

DS9 was actually a really great series because it had it all ... a beginning, a middle and an end. Unlike B5 which disappeared up its own orifice in season 5.

Not a scooby about the quote. Sounds like something Steve Martin or Will Ferrell would say ... and I can't stand either of them!  Evil or Very Mad

"I've had a wonderful evening ... but this wasn't it."  Groucho Marx
macnumpty

It was Peter Griffin in Family Guy. Very Happy

Anyway, I do enjoy the re-imagined BSG. Though possibly because I didn't grow up with the original. Very Happy

"One more drink and I'll be under the host" - Dorothy Parker Very Happy
Blackadder

Macnumpters ... NOBODY grew up with the original. We got the reruns on cable.  Or that's our story and we're sticking to it!!!  Very Happy

"Tom, I ain't a pussy-person. When people look at me, they don't think 'cat', they think 'dog'." - Linda La Hughes (Gimme Gimme Gimme)

What about, "From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more, forever."
Blackadder

Chief Joseph - Thunder Traveling to the Loftier Mountain Heights in 1877 ...

The full speech is ... "Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before, I have it in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our Chiefs are killed; Looking Glass is dead, Ta Hool Hool Shute is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led on the young men is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are - perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my Chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever."

Did you google it?

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.   -?-
