Half of Babies in Scotland Born to Unmarried Parents

I can't make up my mind if this is a worrying statistic or not.  Obviously the most important thing is that the babies are born into a loving family unit.

Maybe it is just a sign of where marriage is heading.

I think I'd prefer people not getting married than entering into it without the requisite strength of will. Once someone is married for, say, the fourth time, one really must start to wonder 'do they really understand what marriage is supposed to be?'.

Anyway, I'm surprised Blackleaf didn't pick up on this one. "Scots: a shower of b***ards" would make an interesting thread title.

I couldn't say I give a crap one way or another. It's really none of our business. All it shows is that society is becoming a lot more accepting of individual lifestyles. I was speaking to my grandmother the other day and she can't believe the freedom 'us youngsters' have these days. She was telling me that girls often ended up pregnant at 18,19 and were forced to marry men they didn't love, or worse end up in abusive marriages, due to pushy parents and forced to live a life they didn't want.

We live in a far more liberal world now, thankfully...

This is a disgraceful statistic.

In itself the figures aren't shocking - it's the fact that so many single mums just have babies to passers-by, so they get to the top of the council house list and spend the rest of their lives living being obese, inactive, uneducated couch potatoes.

And I know that's is an opinion that is commonplace in school staffrooms.

And let's face it - they should know!

We need a land war. The cannon fodder's breeding too much.

The religious overtones to marriage are increasingly irrelevant in this modern society.
Greater individual freedom is to be welcomed and as Azzuri says it is no one's business but the people involved.

I knew some teachers that couldn't teach their subjects for toffee and everybody would have been better off if they never left the teachers' lounge at all.
"I'm better than you..." nonsense, merely shows up a lack of understanding to the complexity that human beings have to live through.

Tom Harris, a Labour MP in cyberspace, on his blog, writes populist nonsense on these types of issues http://tomharrismp.com and was rediculed in the grauniad when one of his attacks on the youth was reproduced.

The statistics quoted in the report don't say anything about the age of the mother or whether or not she's in a stable relationship.

...and I'd like to see "opinion" supported by fact.

Recipee : take one vagina, add one penis.  Stir for 15 minutes and you have a lovely flat and weekly income to keep you in the style you were never accustomed to.

Throw the slags out on the street and take the babies into custody. Wink
