Happy New YearHappy New Year to everyone
In years gone by, when I have been out first-footing there were often quite a few people out and about, but this year, there was absolutely no-one.
Is New Year / first footing a tradition that is dieing in Scotland, or am I just getting old?

Its become less about family and more about clubbing with mates thats the issue i have found. No matter what im doing or where i am i make sure i am home to spend New Year with my parents as we have done every year. But more and more of the people around my age want to go out to clubs in the city with mates.

I think it is more or less dying out, yes. A damnable shame though.

I also feel that the Edinburgh celebrations are dated and need a revamp to continue to hold the crown of the best in the world. That is something Scots pride themselves on and should be retained even if it means more funds being used.

yes it would be a shame if the 'first footing' died out. I remember as a child that my parents always brought in the new year with a family dinner at midnight, and all the relatives would be there. After the meal and the welcome to the new year, most of the adults then went first footing and we went to bed. (after we had our ginger wine of course)
Bringing in the New Year was a great family affair in these day and the kids were included in it.
