SCOTTISH PRO-DEMOCRACY MARCH ANNOUNCED
Welcome to Independence First, the Scottish independence Referendum Campaign. Our main news at the moment is that we are organising our first march on 30th September, 2006 in Edinburgh. Applications have been lodged with the Local Authority and the Constabulary and preparations are well under way. See here for more details.
Independence First demands a Scottish referendum on Independence for the people of Scotland as our democratic right. According to opinion polls independence is the most popular constitutional option for most Scots living in Scotland. You can see messages from our supporters here.
Independence means that Scotland would have the normal powers that almost every other country enjoys. Rather than political policy being decided by the UK Parliament at Westminster, it would be decided here in Scotland by our own Government. Scotland would be an individual member of the United Nations and we would decide our own foreign policy.
We believe that after nearly 300 years of the British union, Scotland's right to direct consultation on its constitutional future, is long overdue. Independence First has no political views whatsoever and our campaign is intended to be wide enough to include every person living in Scotland. (Sympathisers who live outside Scotland can join the campaign as associate members).
Independence First believes that any decisions on staying in or leaving the EU, or whether Scotland should be a monarchy or a republic or any other non-independence issue which might fall within the remit of a referendum, should be subjected to sovereignty of the Scottish people through future post-independence referenda and not included within any independence referendum question.
While the organisation of public demonstrations is a key objective of Independence First, there are several other important initiatives underway and planned.
We are planning to launch a 'Pledge 1 Million Votes for Independence Campaign', see here for details.
We have set up an international media group and are looking to publicise our case in the international press over the next few months.
We have also presented a formal demand for an independence referendum.
If you would like to help with any of these objectives please contact our national secretary at: secretary@independence1st.com.
More information about our campaign is available in our charter and constitution.
Please email media@independence1st.com if you would like to send a personal message of support to the campaign.
To register your support for the campaign simply send an email to membership@independence1st.com To officially join the campaign please send a letter with your contact details and cheque made payable to 'Independence First' for £10 to our membership secretary: Keri Coull, Balnabreich Cottages, Balnabreich, near Brechin, DD9 6RN.
Our campaigning page offers a few ideas as to how you can help the campaign right now. Find Independence 1st contacts in your area here.
Hope you guys don't mind me taking this from the site.

Unfortunately I'm off round the world for 6 months from mid-August so I won't be able to make it.
I will try and make up for it by promoting the march as much as possible on here though...

I'm definitely going. I don't think anyone is able to predict the turnout. I think it's looking good, after being slightly pessimistic.

It is looking good, I reckon a good few hundred, positive feedback that all parties are rallying up there supoort, as well as the convention and other groups.

Is Embra the new Bannockburn Rally?
|
SLG
|
Well the key with this march seems to be inclusivity. I1st have tried to get all the interested parties involved and have tried to get non-political general public interested. I can't see Bannockburn ever being that kind of a march again. There won't be thousands at this march but if it's a series of marches then it could grow into that.
|
carol
|
Kenny I don't think we could ever take Bannockburn's place, i don't think one single party should have exclusive rights to it either and if anything would prefer a multi organisation approach to Bannockburn to make it bigger and better than ever before. Bannockburn should belong to the people and not the SNP.
I'll probably get hung drawn and quartered for that!
SLG providing we get it right tomorrow I've every confidence that these marches will grow in numbers. Once it's over I can get back to some sense of normality until the next march hopefully in the spring

Scottish Tory goes for independence
A former Scottish Conservative candidate and Unionist historian, Michael Fry, has announced his support for the Scottish independence. However, the reason for his conversion is that devolution has failed to deliver:
“Devolution has proved to be completely hopeless, if anything making Scotland a worse country rather than a better country.”
Are the cheerleaders of devolution here over-hyping what it can deliver? What are the lessons that can be learned from the Scottish parliament for pro-devolutionists here?

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the march and rally. It was a really good day and I think we did something significant.
I especially want to thank everyone from who Our Scotland who contributed.
Thank you.
