Jack McConnell and his Unionist Dividend?McConnell: we don't need more powers for Holyrood

SNP could raise spectre of 'ethnic conflict'
http://news.scotsman.com/politics.cfm?id=1578392006
Jack McConnell gets accused by the Scottish Conservatives Leader of "acting like a political ostrich". That is a bit rich coming from the Tories that conveniently ignored the majority in Scotland for their 18 years in power.
| Quote: | | Mr McConnell said he was not "anti-independence", but "pro-Scottish". | Nothing to back this up...
Jack may call himself a Scottish patriot, but very few patriots sell out their country as quickly and easily as he would.
I'm not greatly impressed with his message, his poor spin on a second hand London-friendly script or anything that actually equates to a Union Dividend.
A place to put the nuclear waste if we stay in the Union? Not at the top of anyone's wish-list... but it turns out Cumbria can take all the waste from the decommissioned nuclear power plants. Have they told the Cumbrians?
Union Jack McConnell thinks Westminster is going to change to 'respond more flexibly to different parts of the UK'? Really? The Conservatives will neuter Scottish MPs if they get the chance when they get to power.
Labour would rather see it as a partially completed Scottish Parliament in terms of its powers so as not to further encourage the Welsh Assembly or further alienate the sentiments of Middle England. Scotland is supposed to be happy we have a semi-useful semi-autonomous talking shop.
Are we expected to wait until there has been a few British General Elections (Conservatives in then out again) and a possibly sympathetic government back in power before the Scotland Act, 1998 is altered?
False assumptions of civil strife and inter-ethnic conflict as a possible future set of events is poor and attempting to frighten Labour leaning voters in a way that should actually drive voters away from a party clutching at straws.

The mans no got a clue. Sounds to me like the mans in a panic.
The next step is Independence. Full powers. Nothing less...
McConnell said "In the next 20 years, the Westminster government will need to be able to respond more flexibly to the different needs of the constituent parts of the UK."
Full indepencence will, The scottish parliament can respond better to the needs of the scottish people. The act of union was a sham. Unionist's sold out scotland for money and thrust scots into an unwanted union opposed by all of scotland.
Just a thought, Has anyone checked if the act of union has ever been broken as "laws and statutes" that were "contrary to or inconsistent with the terms" of the Act would "cease and become void."

The Scotsman headline is well OTT.

How desperate must McConnell be to suggest that one of the benefits of the Union is to dump Nuclear Waste in England?
If McConnell keeps coming up with this type of stuff then we can just sit back and watch England declare independence....

I saw the bit on newsnight as well. A totally bankrupt argument. So it's now the "Unionist dividend" as opposed to "Divorce is an expensive business".
I'm sorry but I don't think the UK is that strong, and it isn't a "big power" either. If we really wanted to be in a big strong country we'd be better off applying to the United States to join them.

I think that speech was prepared in 11 Downing Street.
Union Dividend - say that to large tracts of this land such as some of the dreadful housing estates that blight our towns and cities.

Exactly.
Which of his "special advisors" came up with that cracking idea to preserve the union ?
Not that I'm complaining.....

I don't think any of you has got the right approach to this.
Jack MacConnell is obviously a secret closet nationalist. Why else would anyone claiming to be a Unionist be so blatantly leaving himself open to ridicule and under mining the Unionist position as he does? On second thoughts, we live in a modern socially aware and tolerant society in which it is no longer acceptable to mock the afflicted, so leave him alone. Once the backlog NHS waiting list is cleared he will be given treatment in the unit for the seriously confused. Just try to be tolerant it could happen to anyone of us.

Jack was a member of the SNP when he was at university. Perhaps that is why he's having difficulty in finding any real, robust pro-union argument.

FALSYDE, you might be onto somthing there...
He might be secretly working for the SNP. All those trips abroad promoting scotland. No MP in the government would do this. I'm having a gut feeling about this one... (erm, excuse me )
