Kelvin Mackenzie hits backKelvin Mackenzie
The Sun
18th October 2007
I am told by no lesser authority than The Sunday Times that I can expect a visit from the boys in blue following my punch-up on BBC's Question Time.
For those who had quite rightly gone to bed early or who had found Wrestlemania on Sky 983 rather more interesting, perhaps I could enlighten you.
I was on a panel with Cabinet Minister Harriet Harman, who by the way I was surprised to discover was more Baywatch than Crimewatch but wasn't wearing a wedding or engagement ring.
Is that a wimmin thing or had she pawned them off to help pay off the national debt?
I was sticking the boot into the McBottle Brothers when I said that Scots knew how to SPEND money but not how to EARN it, as distinct from those in the rather clever South of England.
It was not an original thought. Public expenditure per head for the good folk in Scotland is £8,414, while in the South East it's £6,949.
Yet it's London and the South East that creates the wealth in this country - if it were a stand alone nation it would be the eighth largest economy in the world.
So the Scots are living way beyond their means, and would have a substantial cut in their standard of living if they were ever to achieve nationhood.
Anyway, the Scots, with not much else to do but cash their benefit cheques, went potty.
Spparently, I'm the man who put the Kint in Kintyre.
The local papers in Jockoland called me a racist, etc, and Radio Five Live enlivened their rather dull output by broadcasting the views of the McWhingers.
Here are some facts. McBottle has over the past 10 years handed £60 billion more money to Scotland than to England. If the moneyw as spent here it would build another 238 hospitals, employ another 1.5 million police officers or hold the Olympic Games six times over.
But more importantly it means we could invest in parts of London which are becoming a national disgrace.
In the latest survey five areas of London - Newham, Islington, Hackney, Haringey, and Barking and Dagenham - are named among the worst places in Britain to live.
We need to do something about this, and the first step is for the English to keep their money.
It's ridiculous that Scottish students dont's have to pay tuition fees at Scottish universities whilst sitting next to English students who do.
The Scots have done great out of us and now it's time to look after our own people.
If there's no column next week you can visit me at the Scrubs. I'm in the cell next to Mad Krankie Fraser.

I honestly don't think this idiot even realises just how offensive he has been. My bet is that before too long he will be glad to seek the protection of the boys in blue.
"it's London and the South East that creates the wealth in this country" - ignorant nonsense, but not in itself racist. His actual remarks were far more offensive than that.
"the Scots, with not much else to do but cash their benefit cheques, went potty" - the idiot really doesn't get it. But I think he will.

C**ts are useful and a source of great pleasure. Kelvin Mackenzie isn't.

What has the Borders done to deserve this shortfall?

There were two letters about this in today's Hearld, both making very good points I think:

Scots denigrate Scots
Mark Hirst (Letters, October 18th) reports Kelvin MacKenzie for possible prosecution for remarks he made on television, yet he ignores daily anti-Scottish remarks from SNP MSPs and Scottish Government ministers.
They undermine constantly and denigrate Scots by stating that immigrants to Scotland have a greater work ethic and are harder working than natives. Scots are fed the fiction that the NHS, agriculture, tourism and other industries would collapse but for immigrants. It is offensive and anti-Scottish for SNP politicians to claim it is only by immigration that Scotland can be made healthier, wealthier, smarter and more successful.

It is not surprising Doug Maughan urges caution before reacting to the recent comments about Scots by Kelvin MacKenzie. For decades, Labour Party members have been informing Scots that their country is an economic basket-case, which gets a good deal from its membership of the UK. There's not much difference between the views held by Mr Maughan and Mr MacKenzie, except that perhaps Kelvin is a touch more frank when expressing his views.

I noticed them myself when I was reading the paper.
This "anti-Scottish" rubbish is a term that really ought to be dropped from the national lexicon. It's quite simply disturbing that in part of a supposedly progressive, European nation in the 21st century we can be behaving like a bunch of 1950s McCarthyites.
As far as I'm concerned, it seems the best people are anti-Scottish. Kelvin McKenzie is certainly not one of them however.
So yes, this is ultimately an appeal for sensible debate on the merits of political ideas rather than these extremely nationalistic appeals to some supposed patriotism.

I think they forgot another. If it's a dirty, low paid job with long hours, and bad bosses, certain people think "get a foreigner to do it". Surely that attitude is a form of racism in itself.

Kelvin MacKenzie is only stating, in much more diplomatic terms, what a great many people furth of Scotland think when it comes to our economic circumstances. It may be nowhere near reality, but perception is far more powerful than reality. In their absolute desire to quash the idea of Scottish independence, rubbishing Scotland's economy, the Unionist parties have only given those who seek Scottish independence a very eloquent ally in the likes of Kelvin MacKenzie and the (disproportionately large) constituency he panders to - the brain dead Sun reading morons that voted Margaret Thatcher into power time and time again.
I mean where else in the world would the principal government party and its cohorts (LibDem and Tory) campaign for election on the basis that had run up an effective government deficit equivalent to 12% of our GDP?

Utter pish, or an elaborate wind-up, one or the other. I've certainly never heard anyone in this government or the last one come away with any of that - especially that only immigration can make Scotland healthier, wealthier, smarter and more successful. I could go into the rationale for growing Scotland's population and the future economic problems of Scotland's projected demographic structure - the reason this government and the last supported it - but I can't really be bothered, because I would like to hope it was obvious to most people. Obviously not though.
