The day Celtic fans start carrying the Saltire and/or the Union Flag instead of the flag of a foreign country will be the day they get my support in Europe. Supreme indifference is all I feel about this game.

If rangers fans decided to fly all of my favourite flags I still wouldnt want them to win a single game.

I would be surprised if any rangers supporter wanted anything other than misery for Celtic tonight, no matter what flags their fans fly.

Celtic fans not flying the Saltire is in contradiction of their claim to be a 'celtic' team rather than an Irish team.  If there were Scottish and irish flags flying together then I could swallow the idea that they are about both commmunities coming together in football, or any other myth.

In theory, the flying of irish flags is not a problem, no more of a problem than rugby clubs in canada flying saltires, or basketball clubs in Boston with shamrocks.

But the reality is that the display of 'irishness' at celtic park is often a direct statement aimed directly at people like William.

I dont share his views about flags being 'foreign' or not, but I totally understand where he is coming from and celtic fans could not complain at his attitude because, for many of them, beneath the veneer, it is the reaction that they want - ourselves alone?

I was wrong. I know have a permanent silly grin on my face even though I normally detest Manchester United.

Celtic did as well as could be expected until the second goal, the gap is obvious, but the same gap exists between Man utd and most teams at the moment.

For Celtic, or any other team outside of the elite, to do well at this level we need everything to click, the players to be fit, the decisions and luck to go our way. Without that it is an uphill struggle or, as Strachan and Martin O'Neill put it, 'punching above our weight'.

Still, Celtic should be hopeful of getting something from all of the remaining games.

Celtic and Rangers could never compete with the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and even some of the smaller Premiership teams unless they become much richer.

Here's an example: In Scotland, during this summer's transfer window (which lasted from the end of last season to 31st August), Rangers spent the most money of any Scottish team on new players: £10.32 million.

Celtic were the next biggest spenders: £8.2 million.

In England, Manchester City spent £32.5 million on Robinho alone, and Manchester Utd spent £31 million on Berbatov.

So teams in England spend more on single players than teams in Scotland spend on all the players they buy during the transfer window.

I read in the newspaper yesterday that even Stoke City and West Brom have a greater spending power than Rangers and Celtic, and those teams were in the Championship last season.

Tell me wise one, didn't Rangers reach the UEFA Cup Final last season? Where did the English teams get in it? Anywhere? It was won by those big spenders of St Petersburg! Rich buggers them lot!  Rolling Eyes

No s**t Sherlock! It lasted as long as every transfer window in Europe. Tell me wise one how does that compare with clubs cometing in Europe outside the G14?

Some would argue that like the credit crisis, the bubble which dictates the spending power of the top Prem clubs is long primed for a pop. Man Utd being the biggest club in the world are also the most heavily indebted club in the world. Man Utd fans are very aware of this and are very nervous or it. Chelesea fans are also aware that without the millions pumped in by Abramovich they would fold. He could well be looking to leave in the next 5 years or so. The result of this could result in it following the demise of Leeds Unted FC or even in the end of Chelsea FC.

Which probably says more about the hysteria governing English football than it does about the state of Scottish football.

Which is because of the huge money they make from getting promotion. It's not revenue based with the possible expection of Stoke who've created a very succesful business model. The challenge for them will come if or when they are relegated.

I seen 3 Saltires last night in the hoops end, Willie and also a lot more green-white champion saltires as well.

As for the game, I thought Celtic played alright but the gulf in class was probably always going to prevail in the end, A tad unlucky with the Berbatov goals.

Naylor? I cannot understand why WGS plays him, He had a good start to his career but has bombed the last 15 months or so,  I wonder why Strach doesn't give Caddis a go? Every time, I've seen Caddis he's looked good and played very well v Barca last year in the champs league.

Positives last night have to be Brown, Caldwell and McManus who all played pretty well. It's good to see Brown back playing the football we seen him at Hibs, I hope he continues his excellent form into the season.

Very difficult now for the Hoops but if they can get 3rd place and a wee run in the UEFA, would be excellent for Scottish football, especially after our disappointing season in Europe for all clubs this year compared to last year.

really?  thats impressive given we have been doing it since 1888 and rangers were only took up as the "protestant/british/shower of b***ards" club in reaction to this.
