McConnell: nuclear waste issue must come first
The first minister yesterday tackled supporters of nuclear power in their den, and held to the line that a solution to the problem of waste must come before any decision to build new installations.
Jack McConnell was speaking at a conference in Edinburgh organised by the manufacturing union, Amicus.
Among the many industry figures who backed that call was Bill Coley, chief executive of British Energy. Describing how nuclear waste in the US was being buried underground, Mr Coley said: "Waste is not a technical issue, it is a policy issue. We simply have to take a decision about where we are going to put it."
But Mr McConnell said: "The position of the Scottish government is clear. We will not support the further development of new nuclear power stations until the issue of nuclear waste management has been resolved."
Meanwhile, Highland Council's planning committee yesterday agreed to earmark just three areas for large-scale windfarm development. The areas are in East Sutherland, Easter Ross, and the Monadliaths.

What does that actually mean? It's all a matter of opinion. Bill Coley already thinks the problem is resolved. I'm sure there are plenty others who will never accept it. What does McConnell require for a resolution to have been achieved?

.....for the public to think it's been resolved.

They don't seem to be doing much to change opinion though. Labour seem to me to be quite happy to stick with the line McConnell's taking above. If they are going to fall into line and submit to Westminster on this issue, I'd expect them to be doing much more to persuade the public that nuclear really is needed in Scotland.

Teh use of resolved makes this very open ended indeed, should that be replaced with "forgotten"
