Morally Bankrupt Unionist Press

I'm surprised there wasn't more attention paid to the article in today's Herald:

Quote:
Our research scotches five key myths, concluding that Scotland does well in some ways, but does not get special treatment within the UK. Scotland, with pockets of deprivation, one-third of the UK's land-mass and far-flung communities, does indeed receive substantial state spending, but its average of £9631 public money per head is still less than London's at £9748 or Northern Ireland's £10,271.

Latest estimates show the tax take from Scotland - buoyed by the financial success of companies such as Royal Bank of Scotland - is higher than anywhere outside London. Arguments rage over North Sea oil and gas, but there is no doubt revenue from the natural resources found in waters off Scotland is being used fill the coffers of the UK exchequer.

Is this what is meant by "the morally bankrupt unionist press"?

The Herald is like the Jekyll and Hyde of daily newspapers.

Tomorrow it'll be telling us we can't survive without 'handouts' from London.

This however is a very good rant about the English press attitude towards Scotland.

Basically, The Herald calls the English press petty and ill-informed.

Jeez, The Herald really has found it's Cojones today!

Quote:
The back bencher insisted that there was now "a growing sense of frustration south of the border" at the injustices within the system and, despite the figures published in The Herald today, he was adamant that "it is not a myth that public spending is considerably higher in Scotland than in England, around £1500" per person per year.

When The Herald pointed out the region of the UK he represents received far more public money than it paid in tax - and far more than Scotland - Mr Brady replied: "I find that very improbable."

the herald is not to be trusted, a dirty f***ing rag, the sunday herald is worse, scotlands version of the guardian. do not buy newspapers people.

What would you suggest we read? The Daily Mail?
SLG

I wouldn't put The Herald into the bracket of the "morally bankrupt unionist press". They are quite open in admitting that they are a Unionist paper though and sometimes they do cross the line of impartiality. The articles yesterday, were certain not pro-independence, but were balanced IMO. I don't think the Scotsman (which I would categorise as "morally bankrupt unionist press") could possibly have published articles on the same topic in a similar manner.

Neither could I see it in the other recepticles which I would classify as "morally bankrupt unionist press" such as the Daily Record, The Sun and the Scottish editions of the UK newspapers such as the Daily Mail, Express and so on.

It was certainly good to see a Scottish newspapers detailing the facts, rather than the prejudices trotted out the by morally bankrupt Unionist press (English editions), but it won't make one iota of difference to the widespread belief, in politics and polite society south of the border that Scotland contributes far less than it receives. Unfortunately the press that peddles these myths are not interested in the facts, because facts don't sell newspapers. Perception is everything and this is one prejudice that has gone halfway round the world, before the truth got its boots on.
mairead

Well the press as a rule don't like to be seen to spoil a good story with the truth do they, so I welcome the article.
azzuri

It does make me wonder why they bothered printing it at all Economist?...

News of the World's latest report on Scotland (English edition only).

Looks like they're doing their bit for independence (English that is).

More 'moral bankruptcy' (please, somebody, tell me what that actually means):
Quote:

RUPERT MURDOCH'S love-in with Alex Salmond when he visited Scotland last week to open News International's new presses set tongues wagging that the papers will shift their support behind the SNP.

Former Labour ministers could only look on uncomfortably as Murdoch and the first minister posed for the cameras, having apparently hit it off extremely well, although it was not the first time they met.

With Murdoch's reputation for backing winners part of his longstanding newspaper strategy, sources close to the News Corporation boss say that he is considering a shift of allegiance in Scotland.
SLG

I think the above speculation by the Sunday Herald is a bit sparse to be described as 'moral bankruptcy'. However, should the Sun switch to unquestioning dogmatic support for all things SNP, then IMO they will be just as 'morally bankrupt' as now. Although it would in some sense provide some balance as the Record, the other mass circulation tabloid, would presumably continue with their support of Labour.
Aventinian

Rather unshockingly, tabloid newspapers have never had morals.
Economist

I'd certainly be extremely uncomfortable if "The Sun" started to support independence - or even the SNP. One of the most amazing things about the SNP becoming the largest party in May, was that it was done against the bile, vitriol and nonsense spewed by the Unionist press.

I'd rather we "won" the argument on independence through rational debate rather than have "it was the Sun wot wonnit". It might take longer to happen, but it is far more honourable to have it like that.
