SCOTTISH National Party membership has increased by nine per cent since last year, according to latest figures.

SNP business convener Bruce Crawford has told the party it now has more than 1100 extra members, taking total membership to 12,066, compared with 10,944 at the same point last year.

He claimed the figures were a stepping stone to victory in next year's elections.

He said: "SNP membership is up nine per cent year on year and since the General Election last year we have continued to make huge electoral progress across the country."

As well as winning the Moray by-election for the Scottish Parliament with an increased majority, the party says it has won nine out of 18 council by-elections across Scotland, gaining six new seats in the process.

The SNP said its increased membership figures also reflected the success of its centralised membership database introduced last year.

Were these figures not announced quite a while ago? There's no doubt that the SNP are picking up quite a lot of members though.

Yes this was announced a while ago - membership is up since then.

If this trend continues, this could be very significant come the elections next year. I know a 9% increase in membership doesn't necessarily equate to a 9% increase in revenue, but it will certainly increase it.

And if Labour's financial position is as dodgy as was suggested in a previous post, it could be significant.

Also the more potential people available to counter the inevitable Unionist propogana the better.
