Multilingual anthology for Scots schools

By Charlene Sweeney

A NEW Scottish poetry anthology being introduced into primary schools represents an official stamp of approval for the teaching of Scottish languages and literature, campaigners have claimed.

The Thing That Mattered Most: Scottish Poems For Children, containing poems in English, Scots, Gaelic and Shetlandic, has been bought by Learning and Teaching Scotland for use in all primary schools.

Campaigners argue that this is a green light for teaching Scottish literature, languages and history in schools. Last year, writers petitioned ministers to promote the subjects in the Scottish education system.

Contributor James Robertson, who signed the petition and has already published numerous books in Scots for children, said: “It has the imprimatur of the Scottish Executive, Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Poetry Library so it seems they are saying ‘we accept and appreciate that this is the way forward’.”

Michael Matheson, Scottish National Party culture spokesman, said the book was a “significant step”.

A spokesman for the Executive said that, there being no statutory curriculum, it was up to schools to select their own study material.

The book will be launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival on Monday, August 14.
